A few years ago I spent a long weekend in the Sandusky area and an afternoon exploring Marblehead Lighthouse. I didn’t know it at the time but Marblehead happens to be one of our state’s most photographed landmarks.
Built in 1821, it’s the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on all the Great Lakes. It now is part of the nine acre Marblehead Lighthouse State Park and continues to be a relevant part of daily life on Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. The white stucco really stands out against a backdrop of sky and water and looks magnificent against the rocky shore. It has been beautifully maintained and was certainly a trip highlight.
For just $3 you can climb the 77 steps to the top and enjoy a nice breeze and lovely view. I happen to be terrified of heights but force myself to climb every lighthouse I encounter. I don’t enjoy it but do it anyway, just to say that it happened. If you prefer to stay on the ground, there’s also a museum and replica of the lifesaving station for your enjoyment as well as picturesque places to picnic, fish or just relax.
I’ve been thinking about this day a lot lately. It was a happy time and an unexpectedly good way to pass an afternoon. Water and beaches have never really been my thing – I think it’s an evolutionary defense because my pale skin is so badly damaged every time I go out in the sun. However, this summer I feel the water calling my name. A big trip out west is planned for later this summer but I may need to find my way back to the Great Lakes for a long weekend before the weather turns cool.
If you’re headed that direction anyway, be sure to stop by the Thomas Edison Birthplace in Milan, Ohio. It’s about thirty minutes south of Sandusky and a fun little place to tour. I get the feeling they don’t have many visitors so they’ll be happy to see you. You can learn more here.
That area has rich history and some really nice mom and pop places for ice cream and fresh seafood. If memory serves, there are some fun antique stores, including one where I purchased my first vintage Crosley Radio.
As always, my advice is to go if you can. Take the long weekend, enjoy the adventure and discover something new along the way.
