This is a travel home day. I’ve been away on vacation with a gal pal who lives in Wyoming. She showed me some of the sights in her area and we spent time in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was rushed and busy but it was a lot of fun.
My flight from Rapid City, South Dakota is currently delayed so I’ll likely miss my connection at O’Hare this afternoon. Or maybe not because it sounds like little is going according to plan.
So I’ve got my feet kicked up on my bag in an empty terminal, just waiting to see what today will bring. It’s all beyond my control so I’ll just hurry up and wait!
Ah the joys of air travel! Keep smiling – I hope it goes well!
Thanks Stuart! I’m keeping a good humor because there’s nothing to be done but….. I hit publish and thirty seconds later learned the flight was cancelled. So I have five hours to kill in a small regional airport before being sent off to Denver. I’ve been in this airport since 7 am. Will make it to Columbus after ten tonight, assuming everything goes to schedule. I’m grateful that I’m good at entertaining myself.
Ah bad news (don’t get that issue in a Hyundai!!!) but I’m glad to hear you’re keeping good humour!
What else can be done? A man in line behind me at the ticket counter was making this huge production over needing to get home to his dogs. I felt bad for his very sweet wife who did her best to calm him down. When in doubt, be nice and patient and don’t be a jerk about things! Lol.
Agreed – there’s not a lot you can do about it so you just have to get on with it – and it’s often not the poor sod behind the desk’s fault.
lol! i feel sorry for his wife as well…
Have you got a good book with you?
I feel terrible for his wife. What a miserable life she must endure if he behaves that way very often. And you know he does!!!
I do have a book, paper and some topics I can research online.
There aren’t enough power outlets here but I set up shop in a corner with an outlet for phone charging – a good perch for people watching. From this vantage point I can watch reunions and sad goodbyes as well as a sweet little old lady who appears to be traveling alone. I may befriend her before this day is over. She looks tired and grandmotherly.
God save us from grumpy people – it is pretty awful being stuck with somebody like that.
Good to hear you’ve got yourself encamped and it’s amazing how much time people watching can take up.
Well if you do – tell her a beardy bloke from England says Hi! 😀
I will certainly do that. She’s in a chair that’s sort of isolated – no others nearby so I fear there’s no way to just casually sit down and make friends. But the day is young!!
lol! Yes it might seem a tad strange if you suddenly loom over her!
I don’t need to scare a stranger today!!!
lol! 😀
Time to escape work – I’ll catch up with you later! Enjoy your lunch!
Have a great rest of the day!!!
Just googled Rapid city airport – make sure you check out the Airhost Restaurant and Bar – apparently the service is good (I look forward to a review).
While I was at it I street viewed South Dakota – seems to be very pretty if flat – part of the US I’ve always fancied visiting.
I’m actually sitting in a comfy chair adjacent to said restaurant. I’ll soon attempt to piece together a vegetarian lunch here and will let you know. Lol. And, of course, I’ll be writing about this place and Wyoming where the trip began but yes…. it’s flat here…. the sky seems quite large … and it’s warm. Around ninety degrees the last few days. Lots of fields and open areas here!
Ah I see – excellent. Good luck with lunch (ah the joys of being veggie!) and I look forward to the review 😀 (You can tell I’m bored at work, I’ve been reading the mixed reviews of their coffee!).
It does look a nice area and I’ve always fancied visiting the ‘Great Plains’ – all that sky looks wonderful. I’ll be looking forward to reading about your adventures.
You must be bored!
I have to say that this area isn’t my favorite place in this country. It’s lovely but there are more interesting places that are tourist friendly without feeling overdone.
I love Utah – google Arches National Park and a town called Moab. Parts of Wyoming are gorgeous. I was in the plains where everything is mostly flat with some mountains. Beautiful in its own way with fun things to do and see but…. the place to be in Wyoming is the northern part of the state. Look at Yellowstone National Park while you’re at it.
Coming from southern Ohio where everything is hilly and forest covered, South Dakota is a little like landing on the moon. Lol.
I used to work with a guy that lived somewhere in the Great Plains – he used to say they named the trees as landmarks 😀 So yes, I can see how out of the world you must be coming from Ohio.
Oh I’ve heard of Yellowstone and the Arches – both are on the list. It’s hard to gauge sometimes that a lot of US states are actually bigger than the UK – I would imagine most have areas I’d love to visit.
Your part of the world does look lovely too.
Every state has something that I want to see. It really is a beautiful country!
Trees are rare in the Great Plains and those that survive are so scrawny that it seems quite foreign to me. So they would make great landmarks!
Here, our states are divided into jurisdictions called counties and those counties are governed by a sheriff, a board of commissioners and other elected officials. The county where I live is 411 square miles and is quite rural- about 13,000 people total. Some Wyoming counties are larger than the entire state of Rhode Island but have fewer people than reside in my county. Imagine being a sheriff, trying to keep the law in such a large area!!!
You drive an hour to get anywhere and many of the roads are dirt/gravel but not maintained in winter. Eek!
Love the beautiful country around the Black Hills. Safe travels
It is lovely here! My flight is cancelled but they got me on a later flight so I’m hanging out and trying hard to keep good humor about the day!
It was great meeting you on the plane! I enjoyed our talk! It was definitely a crazy, long day with the delays and cancellation of our flight! I look forward to reading your blog!!
Hey! I’m so glad to hear from you! I loved our chat too. Hope you made it home safe and that you enjoy your first day of school! Stay in touch, ok? I want to hear all about your adventures!!!
Thank you! I will keep in touch for sure! 🙂
