Pets When We Travel

Poor little Scout doesn’t cope well when I travel or am gone for long stretches of time. When I rescued him as a kitten, I envisioned traveling together some. It quickly became clear that he is not an adventure cat.

So he stays home while I adventure and my parents come visit twice a day to feed and play with him. He mostly does well for them but he’s happier with me in the house.

When I came home Monday night, he purred as he let me pack him around the house like a sack of flour. He eventually wanted down so he could follow me around. He never let me out of his sight and spent most of the evening flexing his claws. Look closely at the above picture and you’ll see my little house panther baring his very sharp claws.

A few days later and he’s still clingy. I have left home for work twice this week and both days he has followed me around with worried eyes while I got ready to go. I feel sorry for the poor guy but life goes on and I sometimes have to leave.

It’s hard for us to remember that while our pets are a part of our world, we are their entire world. I am grateful to have this funny, opinionated, smart little soul to come home to after an adventure.

  1. Jen is home pretty much all of the time, so Edie got used to that. The first year or so, if we both left Edie would be at the door fussing when we got back. She has definitely mellowed out since that, but Jen had a number of appointments the last few weeks and Edie has been doing the following thing as well.

    • It’s so hard on them. They adore their humans and they are creatures of habit so disruptions in routine are difficult.

Scout was happiest during the first few months of the pandemic when I was home all the time. I’m working a hybrid schedule now so I’m gone a lot and home some. Those home days are his favorite and I feel constant guilt on the days I leave.

  2. What Scout needs is a kitten to keep him company!
My tom cat (now fixed) found two kittens in our barn. They were undoubtedly his.
I did not own a female cat, and something had obviously happened to the mother. Amazingly, Tom took over the motherly duties. Luckily, the kittens were old enough to drink milk on their own. He would lay with the kittens and let them “knead” on his belly! I never saw anything like that in my life! To this day, one of the kittens (now a full grown cat) lays on Tom’s back and kneads her claws. We say Tom is getting a back massage! I have always loved cats!
