Appalachian people hold closely the old wive’s tale that when March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb. So if the weather is bad on the first, it should be mild on the 31st. Here in southern Ohio, March arrived gentle as a newborn lamb so we assume that the month will go roaring out.
Another superstition tells us that it will snow three times on the forsythia bloom.Well, it was 75 degrees and sunny for the forsythia bloom yesterday. The evening ended with a thunderstorm. No snow in sight.
Will we see snow this month? Will this fool’s spring succumb to cold and snow when the real spring should be arriving?
Probably so and I’m sorry for that. As much as I enjoy winter with its cold and snow, I’m always ready for spring by early March. Anything different feels like regression and that sounds terrible.
I worked out in the outdoor office yesterday with the doors open and the breeze in the windchimes. Today we’re under a winter storm watch and supposed to get upwards of ten inches of snow tomorrow. Silly March! Make up your mind.
Silly March is right! No snow for us but we are under flood and wind advisories and there’s threat of tornado tomorrow. You never know what this season will bring!
Those old sayings might be based on experience, but things have probably changed!
We had a snowy, yucky day yesterday. Today was a typical Colorado bluebird day – fantastic skiing with fresh snow on the slopes. We still have a lot of snow on the ground, but temps were close to 50 again.
Nice for you to have some spring blossoms already!
It’s nice but I really don’t like it. lol. I prefer the natural progression of seasons and this is all wrong. Sorry. I’m having a who moved my cheese moment.
That’s understandable. Things seem mostly normal here. Not quite as cold perhaps. I won’t be seeing flowers for quite a while, yet.
It feels like spring again and everything is turning green. It just feels so weird!
March has certainly come in like a lion here in southern Ontario. We got hammered by a snowstorm, or should I say, thundersnow (which I didn’t even know was a term) last night. I didn’t even know it could thunder in the winter while it was snowing!
Oh, thundersnow is often a harbinger of a terrible storm. Stay safe and warm!
Thanks!! It was quite the workout to shovel our driveway yesterday, but all the snow looks really pretty. At least the days are getting longer now and spring will (hopefully) be right around the corner!

So, as a Canadian who wanders through America, do you have recommendations for a wandering American interested in your country? Do you have a favorite place you’re willing to share?
Oh gosh, there’s so many beautiful places in Canada and I love how the scenery is so different from the east to the west coast (and everything in between). Vancouver Island is one of my favourites as those tall towering trees and ancient coastal rainforests are pretty stunning. The Canadian Rockies (Banff and Jasper) is a classic spot to enjoy the mountains. The Maritimes is very laid back and is a great spot to enjoy the extreme changes in the tides. Another one of my personal favourites is the stretch along Lake Superior in northern Ontario where the scenery is spectacular.
It all sounds spectacular and like perfect bucket list items. Vancouver Island sounds especially enchanting. Thank you!!!
