Doesn’t it look like a scene from Little House on the Prairie?
I snapped this photo from an open train window as I traveled the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad last year. It’s somewhere in the beautiful San Juan National Forest but I couldn’t begin to tell you where or what went on here once upon a time.
This happens a lot when you’re a backroads adventurer. You commonly roll up on a barn, a house or some random thing along the road and have no way of knowing for sure the story behind the place.
While I prefer answers, there’s something about using your imagination to make up your own story. That’s just part of the journey!

From 2006 to 2020, I lived in a historic one-room schoolhouse, a cozy abode measuring just 800 square feet. Upon purchasing this unique property, I embarked on an extensive restoration project. Over the span of those years, I restored the schoolhouse, preserving its original character while infusing it with modern comforts. The restoration journey was a labor of love. 🙂
What a wonderful project and gift to yourself and to prosperity! I bet that leaving was difficult.
How fun that you took the train from Durango to Silverton. I’m sure it was super scenic. We stopped to see the train go by as we were leaving Durango during our road trip back in May.
It was a fun trip up the mountain. We did take the bus back to town since we had a schedule to keep and the bus was quicker.
