I said farewell to the Nerdmobile this week. It wasn’t the easiest decision and, in the end, it happened extremely quickly. I messaged the dealership in the morning to see if they had what I wanted. They did. I went to look at it and came home with a new car that night.
The Nerdmobile and I had been together for five years and almost 100,000 miles. Together, we crossed the Mackinaw Bridge which is the seventh longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. We explored the West Virginia mountains and went on some great antiquing trips. From cornfields to skyscrapers and from museums to farmstands, the Nerdmobile and I had great times together.
Some days we were active from sunrise to moonrise. We ran errands, went on work trips and sat in the shade at the park for a quick car picnic on more days than I can count.
I felt sort of guilty for leaving her behind. She looked forlorn next to the new car as I stripped the interior of all my stuff and drove away. However, it was time to let go of the old and start anew. The new car looks somewhat sporty and modern. It has lots of bells and whistles I don’t know how to use yet and the controls make it feel a little like I’m flying a small airplane. It’s comfy, roomy and fun to drive and I get the feeling that we’re going to have good times together.
Part of me wants to call her the Bookmobile but that doesn’t do justice to its modern sensibilities. Part of me wants to call her Rosie after the robot on the Jetsons. Part of me wants to follow a friend’s advice and use White Lightning out of respect for the fastness and coolness of this car.
Adam suggested a compromise. She will be known as Rosie the Bookmobile when appropriate AND White Lightening on days when her aerodynamic nature is put to good use.
Letting go of things has never been my strong suit but we sometimes have to let go of the old so we can embrace the new with both hands. I’m glad for the chance to do that now. So, farewell old friend! Hello, new one!
Congrats on the new car!!! I had to get a :”new” car a few months bak, my 2003 PT Cruiser started becoming a money pit. I love the PT and was sad to see it go. I got a 2021 Nissan Kicks and was amazed by all the technology it has … a little intimidating at first, but after 2 months I am getting used to it. My favorite feature is the blind spot detection. Here in NJ I drive on very congested roads and it is nice to have a warning when someone is hiding on my side. I work 9 miles from my job and have 38 traffic lights on my trek!!!

The blind spot detection is such a huge help! At this point I just wish I could remember how to find the step by step directions on the navigation screen. lol.
I’m awful at letting go or getting rid of stuff too. But congrats on getting a new car that you wanted. Love that she had two names depending on the situation (or her personality)!
It’s so hard letting go sometimes. But I was brave, said goodbye and literally drove off into the sunset. I fear White Lightning will get more use. I have a bit of a lead foot…..

It’s a 2024 Elantra SEL with lots of fun bells and whistles and the prettiest darn wheels I’ve ever seen on a sedan. The color is Serenity White with black trim. I think this is the same car.

How exciting! I loved my Hyundai Santa Fe and didn’t want to let it go (still miss it some). I do like all the blind-spot sensing features on my new vehicle, though. Enjoy the rides to come!!
My last few vehicles have been Hyundais! They’re good cars so I understand why you hated to say goodbye.
Congrats on Rosie the Bookmobile! She sounds like a wonderful vehicle. (I know what you mean about bells & whistles – I bought a car last summer and it took me MONTHS to figure out all the features.)
