  1. Wondering Wednesday seems to be unfolding for me. I’m trying to recharge my author persona and finding myself distracted. Only making minimal progress. Wondering what I really want out of this effort. Some days I just want to play retiree. I’d get bored quickly, though!

    • Perhaps you can take vacations from all your retirement projects to play retiree for a few days at a time! Beyond that, I do believe you would be bored to pieces.

Incidentally, I have been wondering something too. I recently read Barbara Rae-Venter’s book about how she used DNA and genealogy to identify the Golden State Killer. She helped set off quite the ethical fire storm. I would love to know your thoughts on using genealogy websites to track down criminals.

      • My thoughts on DNA take a number of avenues. The companies that do the testing do not properly promote to the public. They tout benefits and issue little or no warning about consequences.

People who submit DNA in this day and age should have some inkling that privacy isn’t what it used to be. There are now laws in place that you have to give opt-in permission for law enforcement to access your DNA results.

In terms of doing the research, people like her can pay to access Ancestry and other sites the same as any other member of the public and use it to connect dots between people. I do this all the time. What happens then really is a matter of personal, not legal, ethics. Personally, I’d like murderers to be caught.

      • Lovely. I agree. I would absolutely opt in and be happy to contribute to the downfall of a rapist or murderer. I have no expectation of privacy when it comes to this sort of thing.
