In Great Barrington, Massachusetts you’ll find a little place called Pizza House and Restaurant where they serve up pizza, subs, salads and some Greek specialities.
It’s nothing fancy but it’s a family joint that’s been around for about forty years. The pizza was pretty good and the service was great. My friend has a food allergy that isn’t altogether common. When she inquired about her allergy at the counter, the woman took her time advising my friend and making sure she ordered something that was safe.
I truly appreciated her time and consideration. Nothing ruins the fun like a medical emergency in a strange town and it was clear that wouldn’t happen on her watch.
As we move through this world, we sometimes have to depend on people to help us with seemingly small decisions that have big consequences. When we find those people it’s important to say thanks.
So if you’re ever in Great Barrington, stop by and treat yourself to something good. I had my favorite – mushrooms, onions and black olives!

Ah, Greek-style pizza, one of the things I miss about growing up in New England. When most people hear “Greek pizza”, they think about toppings like feta, olives, and spinach. But this Greek-style pizza is not about toppings, but preparation and ingredients: baked in a pan to give it that perfectly round and sharp-edged crust, plus a sweeter tomato sauce. It does not get the props that New Haven or New York style gets and is virtually unknown outside of the region. The tell-tale sign of a Greek pizza place is either “house” or “town” in the name.
It’s funny because it reminded me a lot of the pizza you find commonly at small shops here in southern Ohio.
