My new survival strategy for cold weather power outages is made possible by my parents.
They thought my request for a pop-up tent was a little odd given that I don’t camp. But they bought me one for Christmas this year and it was the best thing ever.
When this bad boy is zipped up, body heat keeps it nice and warm. It was a little cooler than it could have been because I had to leave the door unzipped enough for Scout to get out to his litter box. All the same, it was toasty compared to the rest of the house this weekend.
You can set it up on the floor or on your bed. I thoroughly enjoyed building a little nest for us to stay comfy and to have enough light for late night reading. It was so comfy I really wanted to curl up in there for an afternoon nap yesterday but there was no opportunity.
So if you live in a cold climate and worry about power outages, a pop-up tent is a great way to go. It fits in a small bag that’s easy to store and can be put together even by one person.
Great idea to stay warm and kill some time!
It works great!
Ohmygosh that is so brilliant! And maybe one of those sleeping bags that is rated for freezing temps. I’m so glad you and Scout managed to stay reasonably warm. Is your power back on yet????
Yes! Mine came back last night but my parents and many neighbors had to wait till today. Honestly, I was toasty warm in there with just some blankets. It worked great!
How often does your power go out that you need this solution?
We are in a rural area with literally more trees than people so it does happen occasionally but not all the time. It’s just good to be prepared. I felt like a little kid, staying up late to read with a flashlight!
I love it! Did you consider stringing up some little twinkle lights inside also?
Chris
That’s a good idea! I’ll have to find some battery operated lights for the next time.
Wouldn’t do much to keep you warm,,,,,BUT it would be neat “looking”.
Atmosphere is important!
What a clever idea! We may need something like that soon. Our furnace is about toast and getting a new one might take weeks. Fortunately, the weather is definitely getting warmer now. Glad you got your power back on, finally. How many days was it out? How did your refrigerated food do?
It went out Friday evening and came back at my house late Sunday afternoon. My parents and some other neighbors weren’t restored until today around lunchtime.
My chest freezer did fine because I keep a big bag of ice in there. The refrigerator freezer isn’t as good at staying cold so I moved most of that stuff to a cooler with ice and it was fine. My parents have a generator so they were able to keep their fridge and freezer running enough to stay cool too.
The tent worked great. Just look for a pop up with dimensions to fit your bed. It’s cozy and warm! Mine rolls up into a small carrying case that I will probably store under the bed so it’s handy if I need it again for this purpose.
Glad to hear you all made it through fine. We haven’t had to go even 24 hours without power.
It is rare here but it does happen. At least now I’m prepared!
