Summer

“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill.” – Harper Lee, from To Kill a Mockingbird.

I happen to think summer is the worst of the four seasons but this quote from my favorite book is superb. If you haven’t read this book, please go do that now. It’s the perfect summer read.

    • Autumn, winter, spring and then summer. Spring just makes me dread summer. October is my very favorite month because it tends to be cooler with blue skies, golden light and colors everywhere.

  1. Summer is my least favorite season also! (No surprise)
I do like your sweet porch photo, and To Kill A Mocking Bird, which I saw last weekend at the Ohio Theatre. Did you happen to go? It was great.

  2. That is a lovely porch scene. I enjoyed the book, but it’s been a while since I read it. No time for rereads now, though!

I don’t mind summer – that’s when I eat salads from the garden all the time. Camping, bird banding, bike rides (though spring and fall are best for those), and lots of flowers. Spring is the least interesting here, but I’m usually ready for warmer weather by that time!

    • Thank you! My porch is screened and I have filled it with an assortment of new and flea market finds alongside flowers. It’s a happy place.

Summer here can be unpleasant- not for the heat so much as the humidity. So there comes a time that I mostly run from the car to the house, the car to the office, the car to the store. Haha. At least we have central air!!

That book is one I will reread and I do try to read it every few years. As I have aged, I notice this book means something different to me with each read or that I at least notice something else each time through.

      • I am no lover of humidity, either. I’ve become a true desert lover! I wish I had a screened porch, though, to keep mosquitoes at bay. I’m trying a mosquito bucket this year to see if it helps. We get sprayed once a week by the mosquito control district, but still they come.

      • I have enjoyed my visits to the desert. A screened porch would be amazing but it sounds like you do your best to keep them under control.
