I read something recently that suggested you should be the curator of your own life and I liked this idea. It’s like curating an art collection – perfect since your life is a work of art. Cut out things that don’t matter and the things that drag you down, steal your time and distract you.
Keep doing this until you’re left with only the things that make your life better and that bring you comfort and joy.
Sometimes it’s hard to know what you want your life to look like and what it ought to be. Rather than picture that, sometimes it is easier to know what it shouldn’t be and begin stripping away the unnecessary.
There is such a thing as addition by subtraction.
Curating your own life will be harder than you think. That’s why you need to start today. Where will you begin?
Brandi, this is definitely the process I’m going through now. Thanks for bringing it up. We should consciously strive to include as many joyful activities in our life as we can feasibly manage. I know that “inner child” is a cliche, but that’s where we should start. Do you have any childhood school projects or scrapbooks/mementos? Where do they lead you?
I’ll have to look. I have been retracing my steps to when I was happiest and what I was doing back then. It was not that long ago.
I’m taking a step back from social media and from people in real life who add no value to my existence. I want to commit to writing more regularly and to reading more. Both activities have suffered as I have struggle to quiet my mind. Anything or anyone that adds to my anxiety or that distracts from my inner peace has to go. Adventures must be prioritized again.
I have much work to do.
I miss laughing. How often do you laugh in your regular daily life?
I probably don’t laugh enough, but I do love it when I do. I have quit social media (FB and LinkedIn). Blogging and some clubs are it. Yes, restricting to the meaningful connections is a good idea. But be open to bridging chasms when possible.
I have started curating the life I want by working on getting myself a car to take me where I want to go.
So far I have completed Steps 1-3 and now I am in the “waiting for other people to do their part” phase before I can move on to Step 4. The deadline I gave the other people is December 9th.
I will talk about it on my blog when the mission is complete!
Fabulous!! A car certainly does give us a sense of freedom! Good luck on all this! I’m not very good at waiting for others to do their part so here’s hoping it all goes as you hope!
