A Serious Question

I have a serious question, friends. Really. I need someone to explain something to me. What in the name of Pete happens to our taste buds as we age?

Friends, I chose pumpkin pie over chocolate cake on Thanksgiving. This has never happened. Yesterday at the store, I chose grandma cookies over holiday Oreos. What are grandma cookies, you ask? It’s a broad category that includes nilla wafers, fig newtons and oatmeal raisin cookies. Well, not the oatmeal raisin. They are one of life’s cruelest jokes and something I would never eat voluntarily.

This weekend at Aldi, I walked right past all the fun Christmas candy to buy a bag of little German butter cookies. They come in various shapes, are not too sweet, and some have little bits of dried fruit pressed into them.

Remember when you were a kid and you wanted everything to be nice and sweet? What happened to those good old days anyway? Welp, sign me up for the crusty butter cookies.

At least I still don’t eat oatmeal raisin!

  1. I feel like I have noticed the same thing. My penchant for milk chocolate has been replaced by anything lemon. I can now easily pass up items that are “too rich” – something I didn’t quite understand in my younger days. In any case, change can be good – and maybe a few less calories? I do like butter cookies, too!

  2. When I was a kid, my mom liked shortbread cookies. I didn’t consider them to be an actual cookie, so understatedly sweet were they. Now, there’s nothing better than a couple of shortbread fingers with my coffee.

  3. Oh my, I love oatmeal raisin cookies! How dare you “trash” my faves!!😉

I still have a super sweet tooth, so I cannot answer your question. I love pumpkin pie, ice cream, candy, cookies. Sigh. Can’t I just eat sugar all day?

    • lol. Oatmeal raisin aren’t real cookies! Frauds! Oh well, you can have my share.

I do still like my sugar and prefer it to anything savory. It’s just odd that now I’m so happy with a graham cracker when I normally would prefer literally anything chocolate.

  4. It’s super interesting how our tastes change as we age. I’ve noticed something similar as well. And also, when I’m eating healthy, the really sweet stuff just tastes too sickly sweet. And hey, oatmeal raisin cookies are delicious!

    • I went off sugar and adopted a whole whole foods diet several years ago. I’ve never been healthier and didn’t miss the junk at all for a long time. Then one day I got guilted into eating a piece of birthday cake, awakening my sugar dragon, and I haven’t looked back since. I would love to kick the sugar but it’s hard to get started.

Although, it would be easy if my only sweet option was an oatmeal raisin cookie. lol.

  5. Girl, I don’t know but I can hardly stand to eat anything anymore!!!! I had to gag down my Mac n cheese from Chick-fil-A and I love their Mac n cheese! The other day I was sooooooooooo hungry but I hated all foods. I’m making smoothies almost every night for dinner because it’s the only thing that tastes good. What is up with that???????

And since when do I like peppermint Stick ice cream? I bought a whole pint of the stuff because all other ice creams I used to love (chocolate) sound horrible.

    Bizarre!!!!!
