The City of Denver owns a herd of American Bison that you can see from an exit off I-70 west of the city.

Sort of.

They have been in Genessee Park since 1914 when they were released by the city as part of a conservation effort. There’s a parking lot with some signage where they say you can sometimes see them and there are hiking trails to get you closer.

We were there on a snowy day when the wind was so strong it would knock you down so a hike to see a bunch of creatures that don’t take kindly to humans didn’t seem advisable.

These pictures were taken with the zoom lens on my Canon. Not the best but at least I can say I saw some!

My friend and I actually had an up-close experience with a Buffalo in South Dakota’s Badlands last year. It walked right up to the car at one point. I nabbed this picture when it wandered a few feet up the road.

So you’ll understand when I say I wasn’t sure if I should be disappointed the Denver bison were so far away or grateful for the safe distance!

So we skipped the windy hike and stopped at a small general store nearby for fudge and candy before heading back to the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall.

If you go, take exit 254 on I-70 which is just a few miles west of Denver. Watch closely for the signs.
