Blink And You Miss It

I blinked and it was suddenly fall. The transition has been happening for some time but the early stages of fall happen so slowly and quietly that it’s often hard to see it coming.

Here’s to glorious blue skies and spectacular foliage, steaming bowls of soup, pumpkin bread, cute scarves and all the comforts of this season. It’s fall y’all. Go enjoy it!

Saint Bernard Catholic Church

Earlier this month I told you about a journey through the Little Cities of Black Diamonds region. One of the most extraordinary finds of the day was this church in Corning.

The original Catholic Church on this site was a wood structure finished in 1886. It was raised in 1914 and replaced with this lovely gothic brick church. The cornerstone says 1915.

I had driven through a portion of Corning and was headed up St. Rt 13 toward Rendville when I caught a glimpse of this beautiful church presiding over an otherwise modest town.

Of course I had to get a closer look!

The doors! Aren’t they beautiful?

You can tell it has been well tended and loved these last 105 years. Here’s one more look.

Amesville Presbyterian Church

It’s fun to visit the same place during different seasons and to study how it changes. While buildings may not change, the way the light hits the building and the vegetation around it do change.

The Amesville Presbyterian Church was the subject of a blog post last year. I returned this weekend to find beautiful pink azaleas flanking the door, softening the lines and inviting you to approach. I didn’t get his picture but a black cat lazed in the shade on the sidewalk nearby.

I’ll make a mental note to go back in winter to see it with snow on the ground!

Chasing Church Steeples

Not much makes me happier than chasing a church steeple. This one is in a little place called Paris, Virginia. Isn’t it pretty?

I had turned off a main highway onto another road to look at a barn but was quickly distracted by the way the light reflected off the steeple.

Even the smallest towns often have beautiful old churches with steeples that reach to the heavens, high above everything else.

This one is lovely. Have a happy Sunday!

Wesley Chapel In Black and White

There’s a church on a backroad I frequently travel and it appeals to me so much that I wrote about it earlier this year. Here’s another view of this church- this time in black and white – with an ominous sky.

Check out the original post to read the story of why this church still haunts me.

Carmel Regular Baptist Church

This church in New Straitsville is abandoned but still interesting to look at. I was dying to go inside but had to settle for street view. It’s called Carmel Regular Baptist Church.

You have to wonder what stories it would tell if those walls could talk.
