The world is a mean place sometimes, especially where black animals are concerned. They’re typically the last to be adopted, the subject of superstition, and often the most at risk of abuse or torture.
My little bat cat is mischievous and temperamental at times but he’s also a sweetheart. I can testify that black cats really are the best little friends.
There are no evil cats but there are evil humans. Keep your black animals indoors and safe this Halloween. From me and my bat cat, have a safe and happy day.
The party’s over and October is nearly through. As we march bravely into November, it’s still a very moderate temperature here. Today will be near eighty degrees when it really ought to be much cooler here in Ohio and Halloween will feel more like Labor Day.
The colors are still pretty in places and there’s no shortage of leaves falling to the ground so that’s nice to see.
I play this game every year where I try holding out as long as possible before turning on the heat. The goal is always November 1 and I can honestly say there hasn’t been a single day I felt tempted to give in and embrace the heat. It has gotten down into the thirties at night a few times but my house stayed pretty comfortable.
Anyway, we say farewell to October today with lovely poem and this oldie but goodie photo of Scout in his bat wings. I would give you an updated photo of him in his Halloween costume but he wasn’t having it this year.
October’s Party by George Cooper
October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came— The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The Sunshine spread a carpet, And everything was grand, Miss Weather led the dancing, Professor Wind the band.
The Chestnuts came in yellow, The Oaks in crimson dressed; The lovely Misses Maple In scarlet looked their best; All balanced to their partners, And gaily fluttered by; The sight was like a rainbow New fallen from the sky.
Then, in the rustic hollow, At hide-and-seek they played, The party closed at sundown, And everybody stayed. Professor Wind played louder; They flew along the ground; And then the party ended In jolly “hands around.”
My sweet little house panther asked me to tell you Happy Halloween. Black cats get a bad rap because so many people believe they’re somehow bad luck or evil.
The only evil in the equation involves humans who neglect or abuse a black animal. The only bad luck is when someone misses out on giving one of these beautiful creatures a safe home.
The day little Scout decided to make his home with me was the luckiest day of my life. He knew I was alone and kittyless and that I needed him to make my life better.
If you have a chance to adopt a black cat, do so and you’ll be rewarded with a lovely, quirky little friend who will bring you laughter, joy and companionship.
If you have a black cat, keep them inside and safe – especially today. Too many people do cruel things to black animals. The world is a dangerous place for them.
Meanwhile, from me and from my little batcat, have a Happy Halloween!
Greetings from Scout! As if a black cat isn’t already pretty cool on Halloween, I sometimes call him Batcat.
Here he is all dolled up for the holiday in his bat wings.
I especially like the clasp at his throat.
Truth be told, Scout hates wearing costumes. He luckily has a great imagination and I suspect he thinks he’s a bat every time he bares his little fangs.
Yesterday took me to Columbus for some antiquing and for a stroll around Franklin Park Conservatory.
It was surprisingly quiet at Franklin Park and I thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the facility and grounds in search of the colors and textures of this season.
This is one of my favorite trees in the world but it’s especially beautiful right now.
They do a great job with colorful outdoor exhibits that can be enjoyed by day and by night when they are lit for a family friendly Halloween event.
There are a couple of pumpkin houses – one made for the small fry and the other big enough for grown ups.
There’s an extensive model railroad with a variety of trains and village pieces tucked into the landscaping.
And lots of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns.
Plus, there are some fun Halloween decorations here and there.
This is a safe space to explore with your kids, a lovely spot to meander with your own thoughts and a beautiful place to stroll and catch up with a friend.
I spent most of my time outside yesterday but there’s a lot to see inside too. Want to learn more? Click here to visit their website.
I forgot to share Scout’s Halloween picture. He hated the hat but was surprisingly cool with the cape. He knows how to rock a great costume with the confidence of a model on a catwalk.
Here’s his other costume. He liked this one better because it didn’t require a hat that covered up his nice ears. He really does make a nice Batcat!
Happy Saturday, friends. Go forth and enjoy this day.
