A good sign deserves to be appreciated. Isn’t it a beaut?
Sadly, I’m pretty sure the sign is the best part of the Sunset Motel but this place is a fun remnant of mid century automobile travel on Old 33 in Athens, Ohio.
The American roadside was once dotted with unique diners and motels, often boasting flashy signs like this. It makes me a little sad sometimes when I think about how national chains make every town look just like the last one down the highway.
Of course, that sense of generic sameness everywhere else makes places like this all the more special. Today, I will be thankful for that.
