Wednesday Eye Candy
Here’s a little eye candy for your Wednesday. Have a great one!
Yellow Springs, Ohio
Coming home from Indiana, I traveled the National Road to Springfield and then hit other back roads to reach the Yellow Springs area. Here I ate at the Golden Jersey Inn (had an amazing black bean burger) and then walked around Yellow Springs for a few hours.
Home to Antioch College, Yellow Springs has a happy, laid back sort of hippie vibe. It reminds me a lot of Athens where I attended Ohio University. There are lots of quirky shops and restaurants to enjoy plus it’s pedestrian friendly and packed with interesting architecture and public art.

Don’t you want to just go sit down in one of those chairs? And I just want to say, there’s a lot of wisdom in that sign message. I am nicer when I like my outfit! Lol.
Wanna go? You should! They love visitors and there’s a lot to do in that area. I’m plotting a return trip over the holidays to see the light display at Clifton Mill and to shop the antique malls at Springfield. Oh! And for all you architecture fans out there, Springfield is home to a stunning Frank Lloyd Wright home.
The Party’s Over
It’s back to the real world today. I spent my vacation doing what I love best these days – just wandering through places I’ve never been. First it was a few solo days in Indiana and then a whirlwind trip to western Pennsylvania with my oldest and dearest friend.
Many miles were traveled and I saw and did more than I could tell you. It was a healthy combination of solo exploration and sharing the journey with someone I knew would enjoy it too.
I’ll tell you more about all this in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, wish me luck as I try to return to work with a good attitude and a focused mind. Happy Monday ya’ll.
The Astra Theater
Little makes my heart happier than seeing historic sites brought back from the brink of ruin. Such is the case at the Astra Theater in Jasper, Indiana. I had never heard of Jasper or the Astra until perusing the tour schedule for Pokey Lafarge several months ago but I’m so glad I found it.
The Astra was shuttered in 2002 and only just reopened this past April. Tucked into a small corner of Jasper’s town square, this building would be easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. But it has a great sign that looks amazing at night and the town is so enthusiastic about their theater. People are proud to have it back, proud to usher, proud to serve on the board, thrilled to know that an out-of-towner came to see a show.
Opened in April 1936, the building originally had a neat art deco vibe. They were able to salvage some details like the original lobby ticket booth and colorful lights inside the theater. They extended the stage and stripped the walls down to beautiful exposed brick. It feels both old and modern at the same time.
The space feels intimate and it’s just a fun place to see a show. It’s a little far for me to go all the time but certainly a theater I would visit again for the right act. I’ll tell you more about the town of Jasper another day. Here’s another look at this outside, this time with me mugging for the camera!
PS: A duo called The Honey Vines opened for Pokey and they are beautiful singer songwriters. So glad I got to hear them too!
Eating Vegetarian At the Old School Cafe
Nothing makes a vegetarian feel more welcome in a restaurant than finding reasonably healthy, interesting vegetarian dishes on the menu. And I’m not talking grilled cheese and sad little salads either. I mean real food. Technically, I’m pescetarian, meaning that I’ll eat some fish and seafood. But even then, it’s not so healthy in most restaurants because everything comes deep fried.
Consequently, I’ve fallen into the rather unhealthy habit of just skipping meals sometimes when I’m out. Or I’ll pack snacks – RX Bars, apples, nuts, etc. just to have something. It’s easier that way. So you can imagine how thrilled I am every time a restaurant menu presents choices.
I had this delicious veggie wrap while out adventuring Saturday – fresh veggies, a small amount of fresh blended cheese and ranch dressing packed into a sun dried tomato wrap with a side of chips and a crisp, delicious pickle. Yum.
I’m guessing I don’t have many followers in the southern Indiana region who are looking for quick vegetarian food, but if you are, this is the place to be. The meal was great and the atmosphere was fun too.
