Yellow Bicycle Canteen

It’s called Yellow Bicycle Canteen and it was one of so many fun discoveries we made on foot in Philadelphia. We were immediately charmed by the curb appeal. The pops of yellow, sweet cafe tables and nifty signage were enough to pull us right through the door.

Guys, they specialize in vegetarian food! It was such a delightful, heart warming experience to walk into a restaurant and have an entire menu of food just for me!

Plus, every menu item can be made vegan with just a few swaps or omissions. This is the sort of thing you mostly find in cities. Given how many dietary needs have become mainstream, it’s shockingly difficult to eat in a restaurant in this country if you are gluten free or plant based.

Where I live, most restaurants cook green beans in pork and add beef to vegetable soup. Some restaurants offer a black bean burger or pizzas you can customize but I almost feel like many places don’t want my business.

But I digress. This place is incredible because you can get soups, wraps, and all kinds of fun sounding dishes. We were there for breakfast so I indulged in something called Y.B. Cheesy, a bagel with two eggs, American cheese and some kind of herb cream cheese spread.

We took our sandwiches across the street to sit in a quiet courtyard and enjoy our sandwiches and lemony Italian sodas.

They are not at all skimpy on the ingredients – it all was high quality and well worth the $7 price tag.

Small businesses are the backbone of our nation and our neighborhoods. These are the folks who are working to provide services and products and food that appeal to you and your sensibilities rather than the lowest common denominator that the chain stores and restaurants focus on.

If you’re walking down the street and spot a little cafe or cute store, do more than window shop if it can. Go in, see what they have and maybe spend a little cash with them. That’s how we get to keep these special places.

My only regret about this cafe is that we only got to go for one meal. Want to see their fabulous menu? Click here.

50 West Brewing Company

Route 50 stretches from Sacramento, California to Ocean City, Maryland, cutting through southern Ohio not two miles from my own home.

Since 2012, Fifty West has been the name of a brewpub over in Cincinnati. About two years ago, the popular business opened a location on Route 50 in Chillicothe. I frequent downtown Chillicothe but had never eaten there till this weekend. There are lots of good restaurants to choose from so I just never made it in. Plus, brew pubs tend to be places where people gather but I tend to be dining alone so it didn’t seem like a good fit.

But I had the opportunity to visit with friends yesterday and was glad for the experience. The place has character. Large downstairs windows were open for fresh air and large tables with benches provide space for groups to linger. A VW Bus sits outside but I complete forgot to grab a picture.

The menu is interesting. It’s mostly sandwiches with a base of burger, chicken, black bean burger or hot dog. You can have them made classic with your standard lettuce, tomato, pickle, onions and their unique fry sauce or you can request your sandwich be specialized. For example, the Indiana is fresh corn salsa, American cheese and lettuce while the Virginia has pimento cheese and some other stuff. The Ohio, of course, is topped with Cincinnati chili, shredded cheese, mustard and onion.

The fries are good. They also have a kiddie menu, milkshakes and shareable plates of things like pretzel bites. The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed but noisy. We lingered a while and it was pleasant.

The Cincinnati location is an old speakeasy and I believe the Chillicothe one is an old bank. You know how I like buildings with a story – even if that story isn’t really told. I would really like to know more about this building.

We enjoyed our time there and I will absolutely go back another day. Oh! And did you see the sign? It’s awesome.

Snooze

This place is on the list for my next trip to Denver. It’s a breakfast joint and they’re committed to locally sourced and delicious food as well as to recycling about ninety percent of their waste.

Plus one percent of their sales go back to the community.

If the food is half as good as their philosophies, there’s much to look forward to. They even have vegan and vegetarian options as well as some French toast that looks divine. The creativity and consideration toward non-carnivores found in small chains like this place makes dining out fun for people like me.

How To Dress A Turkey

Meat hasn’t been on my menu for a lot of years and so this is how I think you should dress a Turkey – simply give it a cute hat!

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!!

Healthy (and delicious) Lunch

Eating healthy in restaurants is hard but it finally occurred to me that Chinese restaurants will serve plain steamed veggies with rice for just a few bucks. This bowl was much larger than it looks here and was packed with fresh, healthy veggies. With a side of rice, it cost about five bucks, officially making it the cheapest and healthiest lunch I could desire. You can’t even get greasy fast food for that price anymore. Plus you get a fortune cookie with some wisdom and your lucky numbers!

The Games We Play: Healthy Food Edition

I learned something about myself last week. When there are nicely arranged platters of fruits and veggies in the fridge, I eat about five times more fresh produce in a day than if it were all packaged up in separate containers.

It would be lovely to say that I’m exaggerating but it’s true! I had made fruit and veggie platters for a small retirement get together for my dad. Leftovers came home with me and I nibbled on them till they were completely gone. So I made smaller versions and found myself eating fresh veggies with every single meal!

What can I say? I’m a visual person and I like pretty things! Oh, the games I play to be healthier!
