Haserot Angel

People claim to hear and see unusual things at this grave but I found this spot in Lake View Cemetery to be peaceful and calm.

This is the Haserot Angel, a bronzestatue that dates to 1923. Industrialist Francis Henry Haserot commissioned the statue to honor his wife who died in 1919. It was created by artist Herman Matzen who was from Denmark but was working here in Ohio

Oxidation of the metal over these last 102 years has caused an effect that looks like black tears streaming from her eyes. The effect is creepy especially since she’s so realistic she could seemingly take flight. Many tourists and ghost hunters claim there’s something otherworldly going on on here.

I don’t know about that but she sure does look sad.

Her name?

The Angel of Death Victorious.

Angel of Pineola

Yesterday I showed you pictures of this pretty little church in Pineola, North Carolina. What I didn’t tell you is that it was raining sideways when we arrived and that we had to wait it out to snap a few pictures.

While we were sitting in the car, I glanced over at a shelter house on the church property and could see what appeared to be an angel praying.

I sat there for a while before asking my friend if she could see it too. Haha. I sort of didn’t trust my own eyes!

Turns out, it is a larger than life angel carved from wood. The artist took great care in the details including the texture of her hair and wings.

I was fascinated by her and overcome with wonder at why she is here. She is simply sitting at the edge of this shelter house surrounded by picnic tables and a grill. It’s like someone put her there temporarily and forgot to come back for her.

It made me both sad that she’s seemingly being neglected in this spot and spectacularly happy that she exists in the first place.

These small discoveries are the reason why I keep exploring. You never know what you might find!

One Of These Days

One of these days I’m going to topple over while trying to snap a picture. Lake Loretta at Alley Park was teaming with dragonflies on Saturday and it brought me great joy to watch them.

I was crouched on rocks on the lake shore, leaning forward and down with nothing to hold me up but what little core strength I have. The fact my heavy zoom lens didn’t make me top heavy is a miracle.

They say you’re among angels when there is a dragonfly nearby. I stood there watching them for a long time but couldn’t resist trying to grab a shot. None turned out great but at least I have something to remember the moment.

In The Company Of Angels

You’ve likely seen dragonflies but did you know they symbolize transformation and self realization? They are said to help us on the path of discovery and enlightenment.

I have also read that when you’re among dragonflies you’re in the company of angels. If that’s the case, a chorus of angels surrounded me for much of my hike Sunday.

Dozens, if not hundreds of dragonflies flitted in and out of my path, amongst the wildflowers and weeds along the lake shore.

In this world, there are about 5,000 species of dragonflies. In Ohio, we have documented 165. On Sunday, I saw several although I cannot name them for you. I can tell you that I very much enjoyed standing on the trail watching these mysterious creatures dance in the sunlight.

With some patience, I was able to capture a handful of pictures and am grateful for each one.

It’s a comforting idea that these colorful insects with their oddly shaped bodies and translucent wings represent more than we can see and that we are among angels.

If nothing else, they give me the feeling and even the hope that I’m on the right path.
