Happiness Is…

Happiness is having an evening free to wander in the middle of the week. A friend invited me to a Chris Thile concert earlier this week. So I wore a cute dress to work, took myself out for the Qdoba Grilled Fajita Vegan Bowl and enjoyed a little walk around the Ohio University campus before the show.

It was ninety degrees at 7 p.m. but it looked like fall and was a nice way to pass a Tuesday night. Not to mention, I had a great time with my friend and got to hear live music.

And, in case you’re wondering, that vegan bowl was delicious!

I Miss Those Days

college days

I commuted to Ohio University and often found myself with time to kill between classes. If the weather was good, this is where you could find me. Countless hours were spent sitting on this sunny hillside plowing through centuries of good books as I pursued my degree in English.

I miss those days.

It was wonderful having nowhere to be but right here, sitting in the grass with a book in my hands. It was here that I read my first Ian Fleming book as part of a film noir class. It was here that I developed an appreciation for Indian literature and it was here that Jane Austin came to life.

I suppose I could go sit there with a book someday but I’m guessing you really can’t go home again. I don’t belong there anymore. But the memory – ah, the memory of the smell of fresh cut grass, the sun beating down, the feel of a book in my hands –  it’s the best memory of my college career.

A Pop Of Color!

I took my camera for a walk on the campus of my alma mater over the weekend. It was gloomy and cold as I traipsed around the Ohio University campus and uptown Athens, Ohio. That’s why I looked for some pops of color.

Here are a few to brighten your day!

Saving Mount Zion Baptist Church

bmt2.jpgThere’s a church in uptown Athens that I pass by occasionally. It often causes me to pause and wonder what the deal is but yesterday was the first time I’ve been on foot and really had a chance to do anything more than wonder.

The deal is that it’s a fabulous historic church that is teetering on the brink of ruin but that is in the hands of good people who are doing their best to save it. Here’s the short story: It’s called Mount Zion Baptist Church. The congregation was founded by African Americans in the late nineteenth century and this building was dedicated in 1906.

bmt1

mt zion church insideIt enjoyed years of prosperity but a declining congregation forced the church to close. Years of neglect and lack of use have been incredibly damaging. You can see the signs of damage from the street but you can see even more from the interior pictures posted online by the group working to save the church. The picture of the inside shown above is not mine but the exterior shots are.

The Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society is doing its darndest to raise money for the repairs that will save this piece of Athens history. They even have the help of RVC Architects, the leading architectural firm in Athens. They have already replaced the roof, the first step toward stabilizing the structure and preventing further damage. But it’s a lot they have to raise and the amount of work needed is intimidating even to a stranger just walking by.

But look at the bones. Isn’t it fabulous?

Want to know more? You can read about the Preservation Society on their website where you will also find information on the church’s history as well as a place where you can donate if you feel inclined.

So Enter

“So enter that daily though mayest grow in knowledge, wisdom and love.”

This is the entrance to College Green at my alma mater, Ohio University. I stop to read it every single visit and I’ve walked through countless times.

It never gets old.

Live Performance Is Always A Good Idea

Darlene Love started her career as a backup singer and consequently treats her singers with the utmost respect.

Veggie Quesadilla at Casa Nueva. Try it with the barbecue salsa- you can thank me later!

The beautiful thing about living so close to a college town like Athens is that there’s never a shortage of good food and things to do, even on a cold Tuesday night.

Last night I spent the evening wandering around town after work. I was there specifically to have dinner at Casa Nueva and to see Darlene Love perform at Ohio University.

In case you don’t know, Casa has the best food in Athens and Darlene Love was a powerhouse in Phil Spector’s infamous Wall of Sound. You may remember her for songs like “He’s a Rebel” and “Today I Met the Boy I’m Gonna Marry.” Her song “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is a staple on most holiday soundtracks.

You wouldn’t guess that she’s 77 or that she’s been performing some of these songs for the better part of sixty years. She’s energetic and her voice is strong. The songs sound fresh and a few of them pretty much brought down the house.

It was impressive.

I say it often and I’ll say it again: if you have a chance to witness live music, do it. There’s an energy surrounding live music that you simply can’t find listening to a tune at home. I always better appreciate an artist after hearing their music live. Last night was no different and I would absolutely recommend seeing Darlene Love if you ever have a chance!
