King Of Indiana Pizza

In an age of corporations with cookie cutter locations, there’s an Indiana based pizza chain that bucks all trends.

Founded in 1956, there are locations all around the Indiana and every self respecting Hoosier I know will tell you that Pizza King pizza is a literal slice of Home and Heaven.

I visited one in Muncie a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Fantastic service, my kind of atmosphere and absolutely delicious food left me feeling happy and wishing I could go back another time on that trip.

I was reminded of this recently when my blogging pal over at Hiding in Plain Sight posted this story about a Pizza King location he made out of Lego. Check it out. He gives a lot of history and the Lego model is pretty cool too.

I found this 2019 story from Indiana Public Media that says that while the food is consistent, each location has its own character. I truly enjoyed the character of the one I visited even though I’m not certain which of the several Muncie locations that was exactly.

In addition to a darn good salad and veggie pizza, I liked the ordering system. You just pick up the phone receiver and someone in the kitchen takes your order. It wasn’t long at all before a waitress brought my food.

I would absolutely go back if given the chance and I’m a little sad there’s no Pizza King near me. Want to drool over their menu? Find it here!

Hounddog’s Pizza

I recently tried to have lunch at Hounddog’s Pizza in Columbus, Ohio. A friend says they have the absolute best pizza around and they even have some good meatless options so my mouth was watering by the time we arrived. Tragically, they were closed when we were there so I’ll have to return another day.

Meanwhile, I did snap this photo in their parking lot. Anyone with a fabulous piece of art like this is worthy of a second trip!

Happiness Is…..

Happiness is kicking up your feet on the hotel room couch after a long day of adventuring and digging into a pizza. It’s nice to try new restaurants and have those experiences when you travel but it’s equally pleasant to simply chill.

Give yourself the opportunity to relax with takeout and luxuriate in the joy of knowing there’s more adventure ahead!

Elliot’s Wood Fired Kitchen And Tap

Work took me to Pataskala, Ohio earlier this week. My department went to lunch at the closest restaurant in walking distance. Turns out, it was an excellent choice.

Elliot’s Wood Fired Kitchen and Tap feels part sports bar, part speakeasy. I tried the wood fired veggie pizza since they are known for their pizza. It was much larger than I expected and quite tasty. The leftovers were a perfect dinner that night.

My coworkers tried the pepperoni pizza, Brussels sprouts, fries and both fish and chicken tacos. They all seemed pleased too.

When I go to Pataskala, I typically hit The Nutcracker Family Restaurant so trying something new was a real treat.

If you get a chance, check them out! View their menu and get the specifics here.

The Best Pizza In Wyoming and Plan B

We stopped for lunch in Lusk, Wyoming on the way to Rapid City. This picture represents a portion of their charming downtown area. I know it’s a bar but I liked the bike and all the colorful signs. More importantly, there was a promise made that the best pizza in Wyoming is made at a local joint here in Lusk.

Alas, that best pizza isn’t available over Labor Day weekend.

They were closed. Yup. Just my luck.

Since we had eaten a light breakfast, we were starving with few food options in the neighborhood. So we ended up at a gas station across the street where we found gas station snacks and “fresh personal pizzas.”

It seemed pretty impersonal pulling it out from under a warming light and it wasn’t especially fresh either. But it kept us from starving until we could get a real meal.

The moral of this story is that sometimes you have to adapt and come up with a plan b.

First though, we stood on the sidewalk outside the pizza place staring at the closed sign and debating what to do. It was reminiscent of the Griswold Family outside Wallyworld when they found it closed. It probably appeared we were willing the place to open just for us and for pizza to magically appear! After some initial whining, we eventually decided that we just needed to not starve and to move forward.

Things don’t always go as planned when you travel and that’s ok. Into everyone’s travel life some gas station food may come. It’ll make you appreciate the next meal even more!!!

Some Advice

September 2018 (7)

Look around. You never know where you’ll find some good advice and great pizza. The above sign hangs on the wall at C&J’s Pizza in Wytheville, Virginia. It’s a little off the beaten path and populated mainly with locals so you know it has to be good. The walls are lined with great memorabilia including this cool vintage sign from the New Orleans Police Department.

“Beware Pickpockets and Loose Women.”

Sounds like timeless advice to me!

The food here was fantastic. I had a delicious side salad and the veggie pizza was amazing. The service here was good too despite the fact the place was packed the entire time we were there. My only regret is that there’s no photographic evidence of this tasty meal.

I try to avoid chain restaurants when traveling. I didn’t drive all the way to Wytheville to eat at Applebees and was thrilled to find this local joint was as good as internet reviewers and  locals claimed. I don’t eat meat but I hear their hamburger pizza is a local favorite and something you don’t find on a menu at a chain restaurant.

Whether it’s your own town or a vacation destination, my best advice is to head off the beaten path and pay no mind to how ugly the front door is. If the parking lot is full and it is clean inside, you’re probably in the right place.

Wherever you go – just beware those pickpockets and loose women!
