Vintage McDonald’s Sign

Muncie, Indiana is a terrific place to spot vintage signs and this is the crown jewel of them all. This gorgeous vintage McDonald’s sign was installed in 1958.

The restaurant has been remodeled but the sign has been well kept and still lights up. It’s even more impressive in person than it appears in pictures.

Like most kids, I was a fan of McDonald’s as a child. A cheeseburger Happy Meal with the toy and cookies was the bomb. My folks say I called it Donald’s and announced to everyone in the car that there was a Donald’s nearby once I recognized the Golden Arches. I don’t go there much anymore as they’re not hospitable to vegetarians but I do have a weakness for the Egg McMuffin without the meat and a Diet Coke. That’s a breakfast of champions for any road tripper especially when there’s a gorgeous old sign to enjoy.

If you go, it’s located at 500 East Charles Street, Muncie.

Signs Of Aztec

Aztec, New Mexico is a cute town with some interesting storefronts. There are some especially nice signs outside several shops. It may not be Heaven On Earth as the sign pictured above suggests but it did feel like a welcoming place.

I was especially charmed by this optometrist’s sign. Optik Icare Iwear is the kind of business name I would typically despise but it works well with this sign so I’ll forgive them. In case you are wondering I also hate it when businesses get cute by purposefully misspelling words like Kay’s Kountry Korner. My English major heart withers at the thought. But I digress…..

The star of the show is this old Aztec Theater sign. It opened in 1927 under the name Mayan Theater. By the forties it had been renamed Aztec. Now the theater operates as a concert hall under a different name. I imagine this place has been an important source of entertainment and community for this small town.

The marketing nerd in me absolutely adores interesting signs. Towns that have great signage tend to have more character and businesses that employ some fun and imagination in their signs get bonus points from me.

Do you notice signs? Do they matter to you or are they just clutter?

Cork ‘N Bottle

The Cork ‘N Bottle is on the main drag in Cortez, Colorado. I couldn’t tell you a thing about the building but the sign is amazing.

My western adventure pal is a good friend. She understood the cue when she heard me gasp, slamming on the brakes for a quick picture.

Isn’t it fabulous?

Fiesta Twin Cinema

When it comes to this sign, I have but one regret.

I didn’t go back to see it lit up after dark.

The building itself isn’t anything to write home about but that sign is pretty spectacular. If you ever find yourself traveling along Main Street in downtown Cortez,Colorado be sure to at least slow down and admire the pretty colors.

Maybe the next time I’m in town I can stop for a movie instead of just a photo. For now, I’m happy for the photo.

Stardust Motel

The actual motel is just your run-of-the-mill midcentury motel building and isn’t much to look at. However, the sign is a beaut. You’ll see it if you come into Greenville on Ohio 49.

Wanted

As seen at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. Can you read it? They clearly have their priorities straight.

Have a great day, friends!
