Pete’s Kitchen

If you’re in Denver and looking for a quick diner breakfast, the local chain Pete’s has an old school diner called Pete’s Kitchen.

Choose from a booth or a stool at the counter. If it’s warm enough you can eat outside too. Wherever you sit, the food is good and comes out quick.

We went for breakfast one day. My veggie omelette, potatoes and toast made for a huge serving and it was all made fresh to order.

My stomach was on Ohio time so I devoured every bite. Prices were reasonable and I would absolutely go back if given a chance. Want to visit or just learn more? Visit their website!

Sunset Motel

A good sign deserves to be appreciated. Isn’t it a beaut?

Sadly, I’m pretty sure the sign is the best part of the Sunset Motel but this place is a fun remnant of mid century automobile travel on Old 33 in Athens, Ohio.

The American roadside was once dotted with unique diners and motels, often boasting flashy signs like this. It makes me a little sad sometimes when I think about how national chains make every town look just like the last one down the highway.

Of course, that sense of generic sameness everywhere else makes places like this all the more special. Today, I will be thankful for that.

The Moose

The Moose Lodge in Glouster always makes me smile. Here’s hoping these fun details brighten your day as well!

A Coca Cola Surprise

Yesterday was a meandering day. I’ll share some of those pictures this week but here’s something small for now. You can be sure I slammed on the brakes when I spotted this Coca Cola advertisement in Greenfield, Ohio.

It’s a narrow space between the buildings and you just see a sliver until you’re right up on it.

The brick is amazing.

Things like this keep me on the road, meandering across rural America and through small towns, seeking the old and unique things that make these places special.

I hope I never lose that sense of curiosity and awe about the world around me.

The Signs of Rapid City

Signs (17)

Of all the towns I’ve visited recently, Rapid City, South Dakota wins the prize for the best cool signage. Throughout downtown, there are tons of great new and vintage signs that make you want to go into a business.

Signs add character and charm to a streetscape. They tell you about the business and about the amount of care the business owner has taken in presenting themselves to the world. A good sign is like a firm handshake and makes a great first impression.

Here are some signs that I liked and hope you will too.
