The Bluebird Theater

This gem is just a few blocks from the Airbnb where we stayed in Denver. We saw it from the car window a few times and I demanded that we go back for a quick picture even though what I badly wanted was to go inside for a show.

Like every other theater in the country, they’re closed right now and holding their collective breath for a brighter day.

They’ve been around since 1913 so I can only hope they will hold on until circumstances improve. Interior pictures on their website look incredible so I would love sit inside for a show sometime.

Someday.

As a spirit animal, the bluebird is meant to symbolize a life of joy. So we will look forward to joyful days when stages like that at the Bluebird are full again.

Angel In Boxing Gloves

As Covid-19 flares across this country, I have heard experts describe what is to come as a tsunami.

Our health care professionals are exhausted.

They are frustrated.

I imagine they are struggling more than we know in some of our country’s hardest hit areas. Someday, I fear they will have the same kind of PTSD that effects soldiers.

The holidays will likely usher in a new era of horrors that we all should be worried about now.

It’s hard for many of us to stay home all the time as we need to work, to buy Christmas presents or food. The economy needs us to be out there buying and exchanging money for services – a calculated risk here and there may be worth it. But we owe it to ourselves to stay healthy and to not share our germs with others. So please wear your mask, wash those hands, and social distance like your life depends on it.

After all, it may.

The mural is in Denver and is one of many spectacular pieces of art you can view from the car in that city. The image of a healthcare angel in boxing gloves seems more appropriate now than ever.

Voodoo Donuts

When my friend picked me up from Denver International Airport we were together for all of about eight minutes when she announced that there was a donut shop we had to try.

Being the supportive friend that I am, I thought that sounded great.

It is a chain but each location is said to have its own flare. While the decor is kitschy and fun, no one goes for the artwork.

They have a huge selection of yeast and cake donuts in more flavors than I can recall. Some are vegan. All look delicious.

I got a hot chocolate and a vegan maple cream to enjoy on our journey that day. It was soft and just the right degree of sweet. I also picked up one with Oreos and peanut butter to enjoy later.

That one required a fork and plate as you can see from the picture above..

They have a number of seasonal items like a pumpkin cannolo and a pumpkin spice cake donut topped with cream cheese icing.

There are the regulars with jelly or creamy fillings and some with creative names like Oh Captain, My Captain which is a vehicle for a mound of Captain Crunch cereal. The Memphis Mafia involves peanut butter, chocolate and cinnamon.

How could you go wrong?

There was a study done some years ago that found that food is more attractive when placed in a lit and rotating case. If that’s true, the two revolving and thoughtfully lit tall cases of donuts in motion was overkill.

They look amazing standing still. And the smell is heavenly too.

There are two Voodoo Donuts locations in Denver and more in Oregon, Texas, California and Florida. If you’re in the vicinity, my advice is that you find your way there. Want to learn more? Visit their website!

A Sign of the Times

It’s sad that we need signs to remind people to be patient and nice but here we are.

This was outside a bar in Golden, Colorado but I’ve seen them at restaurants, bars and stores nearly everywhere I go.

If you’re out and about today, do me a favor and wear your mask, be extra nice to your cashier, hold doors for others, and just try to be a nice human.

It will make your day better. I promise.

Car Dancing In The Rearview Mirror

My hometown is so small it has a single traffic light. Actually, that traffic light is the only one in our entire county.

While we are rural, there are certain times of day that traffic can be bad. So if you’re sitting at a two way stop attempting to turn left onto Main Street when school just let out, you could be waiting awhile.

One day last week I was waiting impatiently for my turn to go when I noticed the driver of the car behind me.

She was happily car dancing, singing and drumming the steering wheel. She appeared to not have a single care in the world.

I suddenly felt silly for being so impatient and it was a light moment, a reminder that we can enjoy the small things even when we are trying to get someplace else.

A few miles down the road, I was sitting at another stop sign, this one on a less traveled country road. Remembering the young Dancing Queen from that other intersection, I paused to enjoy this scene and to breathe the fresh Ohio air.

It required under a minute but those few seconds of beauty were like a much needed balm for the soul.

Na-Nu Na-Nu

Denver has some magnificent street art and this is a perfect example.

Amidst the traffic and homeless, the late Robin Williams as Mork from Ork smiles down on passersby.

The words ring true. We miss you Robin. Thanks for the smiles and Na-Nu Na-Nu.
