The Learned Owl Book Shop

Hudson is a pretty-as-a-picture town in northeastern Ohio. Tree lined streets, cute shops and plenty of greenspace will drawn you in and make you want to stay. At least that’s the effect it had on me. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to dwell here. Instead, we were there to check out a bookstore and pick up some chocolates on the way home.

The Learned Owl Book Shop has been around since 1968 and offers books for all ages on three floors. It’s a charming shop filled with bestsellers as well as some harder to find titles that you didn’t know you needed until they caught your eye here.

We went here because I liked the name. When we got there, I liked the sign. When we went inside, I liked the total package.

It’s not always fair to judge a book by its cover or a store by its sign. It’s awfully nice, though, when the inside lives up to the outside! Find the Learned Owl on Hudson’s Main Street and learn more about them on their website!

As Seen From The Road

You just never know what you’ll see when you venture outside and into public. I got a kick out of this company’s creative marketing as we traveled somewhere outside Lakewood, Colorado.

Sleeping with a drip?

Humor is a terrific sales technique and it worked on me. I would absolutely give them a chance if I lived closer and needed their services.

Signs Of Aztec

Aztec, New Mexico is a cute town with some interesting storefronts. There are some especially nice signs outside several shops. It may not be Heaven On Earth as the sign pictured above suggests but it did feel like a welcoming place.

I was especially charmed by this optometrist’s sign. Optik Icare Iwear is the kind of business name I would typically despise but it works well with this sign so I’ll forgive them. In case you are wondering I also hate it when businesses get cute by purposefully misspelling words like Kay’s Kountry Korner. My English major heart withers at the thought. But I digress…..

The star of the show is this old Aztec Theater sign. It opened in 1927 under the name Mayan Theater. By the forties it had been renamed Aztec. Now the theater operates as a concert hall under a different name. I imagine this place has been an important source of entertainment and community for this small town.

The marketing nerd in me absolutely adores interesting signs. Towns that have great signage tend to have more character and businesses that employ some fun and imagination in their signs get bonus points from me.

Do you notice signs? Do they matter to you or are they just clutter?

Fillmore Auditorium

There’s a fantastic auditorium sign just blocks from the State Capitol building in Denver. It’s for the Fillmore Auditorium but this old building hasn’t always been an auditorium.

It actually began life as a roller rink in 1907. Since then it has been everything from an indoor ice rink to a flea market and even a car factory.

It was repurposed over twenty years ago, redesigned inside to replicate the famous Fillmore in San Francisco. It’s now a popular live music venue. While I haven’t been inside, I was infatuated with the exterior as we sat in traffic inching down the street. Consequently, they aren’t the best pictures but you get the gist.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll catch a show there sometime and report back on the adventure.

Sunoco Sign

This little number grabbed my eye the other night while pumping gas at a truck stop. A third party observer probably wondered what on earth was so fascinating in the distance.

It’s just a Sunoco sign without the No. Weird as it may be, this is the sort of thing I live for while out roaming the world.

The colors, shapes and the oddity of it are interesting to my eye. It’s Saturday! Head out into the world with your camera or phone and look for something unusual to document.

Stardust Motel

The actual motel is just your run-of-the-mill midcentury motel building and isn’t much to look at. However, the sign is a beaut. You’ll see it if you come into Greenville on Ohio 49.
