Rebellion Books

One of the highlights of any trip for me is finding the local bookstores. On my recent Pennsylvania adventure, we found a wonderful independent bookstore called Rebellion Books.

This store is carefully curated and has a surprisingly nice selection of non fiction along with children’s books and a fantastic variety of fiction.

In the world of independent book stores, it can be challenging to find good non fiction selections so that was exciting.

Rebellion Books is located in an 1897 building in downtown Bedford. It is named after the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion which happened in and around Bedford.

I really liked this store. It’s cozy and inviting and it was like their buyer knew exactly the kind of book I would want to read.

I could have stayed all day and I was pleased to support them by purchasing more than I probably should have.

Want to visit? It’s located on the historic Lincoln Highway and just across the street from Bedford Candies. It’s also not too far from the giant coffee pot!

Books In Stock Used Books

For more than thirty years, Wooster, Ohio has been home to a used book store called Books In Stock.

The street view is cute but the inside of this store left me gobsmacked. In fact, my fella and I enjoyed it so much, we went two days in a row! There are books upstairs and downstairs – about 80,000 of them – in all varieties of fiction and nonfiction.

I found a stack of out-of-print Sharyn McCrumb books. Adam barely left the corner with the old west non-fiction during our first trip because the inventory was so rich and this area is one of his favorite genres. He gave off kid in a candy store vibes every time I walked past.

The kids room upstairs features a nice mural. Everything is in good condition, it’s organized, and the prices are fair.

We were barely a mile down the road before I was plotting a summertime return.

How fortunate for the people of Wooster they have such a nice bookstore! Find more about them here!

What We Think About

“We become what we think about most of the time.” —Earl Nightingale

And poof! I’m a bookstore! Although, I wouldn’t enjoy letting other people touch or take the books so that would be a problem.

Friends, tell me something. What thing do you think of most of the time? What would you be?

Is that thing worth your time and mental energy? Is it worth becoming? Perhaps it’s time to redirect your thoughts and energy for a while.

Think about it.

Browse Awhile Books

Downtown Tipp City, Ohio has a host of local shops and restaurants that look intriguing from the street. We recently visited and had time for just one so we, of course, chose the bookstore. Browse Awhile Books is packed from floor to ceiling on two floors that stretch over 4,000 square feet.

Friends, they have about 150,000 used books in a wide range of genres including books that are rare and out-of-print. History, classics, science, nature, mysteries,  science fiction, cookbooks, romance, biography – you name it, they have more than you could probably browse in a day.

We gave it the old college try.

We each left with a few intriguing selections and a desire to return on another day. That’s when you know you had a good time, when you leave wanting more.

Lots of online sources claim this bookshop is haunted by at least fifteen ghosts. The building is more than 150 years old and has served many purposes including bakery, hardware store and grocer. So, if you go and encounter something otherworldly, I’ll expect you to report back!

This Weekend

This weekend will be one of forced rest. I hurt my ankle earlier this week and ended up making an unscheduled trip to the chiropractor yesterday. While I can walk on it, it has some issues and I’ll be spending most of this weekend with that leg  elevated.

So, I did what any rational book hoarder would do and popped into Wheatberry Books to pick up a page turner of a book to help me through my convalescence. Mind you, I could be crushed under the weight of my to be read pile but I didn’t have this book and that’s an important distinction.

I needed this book.

I was dying to get out of the car and walk around Yoctangee Park. I yearned to soak in the Autumn colors and walk through the leaves but didn’t trust myself to walk far. So I had a car picnic and enjoyed the view.

Today I’ll make a little veggie tray for snacking, use up some stray potatoes in a soup, and spend the day with my feet kicked up and a book in hand. If I’m lucky, Scout will curl up next to me to make sure I don’t get lonely.

He’s an attentive little caregiver.

Happy Saturday, friends! Stay home and be cosy or go forth and adventure. Whatever you do, enjoy your day!

The Bookery

The first stop on our fifteen store book tour of the Cincinnati area was The Bookery. First of all, can you think of a better name for a bookstore?

The Bookery. I like it.

Situated in Cincinnati’s quaint Columbia Tuscolum neighborhood, their closest neighbors are an art gallery, a florist and a church. It’s a quiet, lovely little area with free street parking.

It’s owned by a couple who simply love books and who say on their website they are trying to help others take back their time from technology and screens in favor of reading books.

This store was so much fun to browse because the fiction collection is really extensive and the nonfiction area, while smaller, is high quality.

Not to mention the near magical children’s section with murals and furniture invites the wee ones to sit and enjoy their finds while parents shop. I also discovered a sweet little chapter book series for youngsters that has been good for my tired brain. Don’t judge but children’s books make great palette cleansers.

The woman who checked us out was pleasant and well informed about the books we were buying. She really seemed to know her stuff and was excited for our business. I want to go back soon.

Simply put, The Bookery is the kind of place that offers a little something for everyone and where you’re sure to find something you didn’t know you couldn’t live without.

It’s a warm and inviting space that makes you want to linger and enjoy the treasures. It also has made the short list of bookstores that we both wish to revisit when we’re in town.
