Perfectly Normal

Working from home has presented some unique challenges. I’m actually more productive at my quiet house but I also can go for long periods of time without speaking to or seeing other humans.

I think I’m doing ok with this. My mental health seems strong. And then I realized last night that I’ve been naming all the little creatures at the bird feeder.

Meet Laverne….

…and Shirley…..

And yes, there’s a Lenny and Squiggy too but I don’t have pictures of those guys.

Then there are the chipmunks – Alvin, Simon and Theodore – that chase each other around the yard as well as a woodpecker that I can’t resist calling Woody.

Naming the wildlife…. that’s perfectly normal, right? Right???

The Day a Flower Saved a Life

When I came home last night a single flower was calling my name. A trip to the store meant that my hands were full but I couldn’t get out of my mind that this flower should be preserved with a picture. After all, I had photographed it last week when it hadn’t yet opened.

My camera was hooked over my shoulder so I ran outside and snapped this picture.

And that’s when I heard a noise. The tiniest squeak followed by soft splashing. When I turned to investigate, there was a chipmunk trapped in a bucket of water. I had left it in the yard and rain had collected during the last storm. This little guy was treading water with all his might but was stuck. I tipped the bucket to help him out and he lay on the ground, panting for several seconds before running off into the woods.

If it is possible for flowers to see and feel and communicate, I’m certain this one did just that by calling me over for a picture. And if nothing else, it’s a happy coincidence that I was around to give the little guy a hand.
