This picture cracks me up. I made it at a historic site in Virginia in 2016. I don’t recall which one but that trip took us to several attractions including Jamestown and Williamsburg.
Incidentally, this is a more colorful representation of what my hair is starting to look like – long, shaggy and multi colored.
I saw a video this week of a farmer in England using sheep sheers to cut his own hair. We aren’t there yet but I’m going to need a lot of attention when this is all over.
Diners hold a special place in my heart alongside random vintage black and white pictures. This image was on Pinterest and is credited to Frank Bauman who made it for a 1960 Look Magazine assignment.
Other people like the photo because it features the infamous Vince Lombardi who was a Green Bay Packers coach. He was a regular here, often stopping on his way to the stadium in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
But it holds so much more than a famous sports figure. First of all, that’s a rather unfortunate name for a restaurant. It would not do well in our 2020 germ nervous world of COVID-19. But look a little closer. Notice the menu overhead? It gives some insight into what people were eating and what it cost.
There’s a Kellogg’s display filled with single serve boxes of cereals you can still buy. Classics never go out of style. A Pepsi sign reminds us to please pay the cashier while the pie case is nearly empty. You can see the pattern of the countertop and style of dishes they were using in 1960. In fact, it’s all pretty familiar as I’ve been in a number of diners that resemble this one.
While the black and white is amazing, I’d love to see all this in color. Better yet, it might be fun to step into the picture and spend a little time.
Saturday’s adventure was hampered by the clouds which moved in and settled over the area for much of the day.
I used the gloom to my advantage for some black and white photos at this old church.
It is no longer used and there’s a window broken out. White curtains flutter in the breeze.
This is how they protected the glass on most windows. I like it.
It has a well maintained cemetery and I recognized many names as I wandered through. Here’s another view.
You can see here that the sky was a bit moody – not great for happy adventures but nice for some dark photography!
It’s not a village and they don’t just sell antiques but Antiques Village is one of my favorite places to search for treasures. It’s in Dayton and I’ve been going a couple of times a year for the last two years.
It appears to be an old grocery store in a strip mall and it’s packed with over 350 vendors selling antiques, crafts, reproduction items, books and all manner of other fun things.
You can absolutely get lost in a place like this.
If you’re a record collector like me, there are tons of records here. I’m actually ashamed to say how many albums I’ve bought here so we won’t dwell on this topic. . .
One large corner is devoted to books which are sold to benefit a local charity. There’s a vendor that specializes in vintage clothing, hats and bags. Their prices are a bit high but it’s a fun booth to browse. Plus there’s lots of furniture and a couple of booths with high end farmhouse decor that I always admire but that doesn’t fit my personal style.
And then there are the more traditional antique mall kind of booths where you find everything but the kitchen sink.
It’s Covid closed right now but when things open up, I’m thinking this will be a day trip. If I can time it right, maybe I can stop and see my pilot friend for a ride in one of his vintage biplanes. There’s a restaurant in downtown Dayton that can make a vegan version of almost every menu item so that will be a must as well.

There are tons of vendor malls, junk shops, record stores, book shops, and antique stores that will be grateful for our business including many in my own area. Don’t forget to give them some business when you can!

My neighbor very kindly has invited my family to walk her property all we like.
There’s forest and field filled with birds, squirrels, deer and other critters as well as remnants of a simpler time. It’s peaceful and pretty and a real treat to enjoy.
