The Starkness Of Fall

I live in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio where we have countless visitors come for the fall foliage. The trees are mostly bare now so the flow of visitors has slowed some, leaving the trails pleasantly quiet.

While the brilliant golds and reds of fall are gorgeous, I think there’s still something beautiful about the landscape after the leaves fall. It’s stark and basic. It’s quiet and calming. The beauty is subtle but lovely, even on a gloomy day.

This is one of a series of photos made on the Moonville Rail Trail over the weekend. We had the trail mostly to ourselves except at the end when we arrived back at the historic tunnel where people gathered to ghost hunt. I wondered if they would venture out of the tunnel to appreciate the starkness of the transformed landscape.

For their sake, I hope so.

Plains Conservation Center In Black And White

If you ever find yourself in the Denver area looking for somewhere unusual to explore, consider stopping at the Plains Conservation Center. I wrote about it another day but for today I just wanted to share some pictures.

It was a gorgeous blue sky day but there’s something incredibly emotional about this place in black a white.

It’s lonesome and a little sad. You can’t help but wonder who lived on this land, what their lives were like. Did they die here or move on to another place?

Here’s one more photo.

If you get a chance, stop by for a look around. There are a few farm animals plus an array of birds and creatures on the ground. The nature center is worth a stop too. Be sure to check out the drawers filled with artifacts from the property including broken china pieces and some other things you might find intriguing.

Did We Make It?

Four day workweeks are often the hardest. In this case, it has felt like four Mondays in a row and they have been the Mondayest of all the Mondays.

I think it’s finally Friday (right??) and, for that I am grateful. Whatever day it is and wherever you are, I hope you make the best of it! The weekend is just a few hours away so be sure to enjoy that too.

Peaceful Fishing

He was all alone. A man, a bucket and a line. The sky was blue but the water looked muddy. Still, he looked so peaceful on this cool January day I couldn’t resist capturing his silhouette.

The picture wasn’t so interesting in color but converting it to black and white gave it all sorts of character and interest. Some might call it lonesome but I think it’s peaceful and calming.

The Anchorage In Black And White

Yesterday I told you about my trip to the Anchorage in Marietta, Ohio. Here are some more pictures, this time in black and white.

Here’s the front of the tower.

A cradle in an upstairs bedroom.

You walk through the attic to get to the tower stairs.

The light in this room was both lovely and creepy. I still say it looks like a good place for a Victorian seance.

Here’s one more. This home has some beautiful windows and woodwork, even in rooms like this one that are awaiting restoration.

Grace Christian

This old church is located on a side street of Jefferson, Ohio. I swung through town on my way back from Jamestown, New York last year and snapped these pictures with my iPhone.

I found it both lovely and haunting. Here’s one more.
