Saturday Is A Beautiful Word

Saturday is a beautiful word filled with endless possibility for us 9 to 5’ers. Sometimes we envision ourselves obliterating a to-do list, spending time on a hobby, or out exploring. My day will be a little of all of these things.

Today won’t be beautiful but it will be 44 degrees and that’s pretty warm so I’ll be going outside anyway. Fresh air is good for clearing the clutter from one’s mind and lungs.

Conditions may not be perfect but it’s the only Saturday we have this week so it’s best to seize the day and use the free time to our advantage.

If you’re watching the news, you know that life here in America has been stressful lately.

I haven’t talked about this here because I consider it my job to rise above the muck of daily living. Instead, I try to give you something positive to think about and something productive to aspire to in your own life. However, it’s important to note that humans were not designed to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Whether you’re mad because you don’t understand why everyone isn’t thrilled with the direction of our government or you’re terrified because you stand with the rest of the world’s belief that the American government is on the wrong side of history, the burden is not yours to carry today.

Take a day off from the madness. Turn off the news, stop doomscrolling social media. Let it go. Even if it is just for today.

You have my permission and my encouragement. You deserve a day off.

Use today to do something you’ve been putting off or to take a long drive on roads you’ve never driven. Invite a friend for lunch or get lost in the quiet of your local library. Bundle up and sit on your porch if you can’t leave home. Nothing feels better than attacking a space to declutter and clean.

My day will include home chores, a hike, and time with my fella. I’ll be avoiding the news and will resist the world’s insistence that human beings are most valued for our wallets and consumerism. Yup, my No Spend Challenge continues in its harshest form again.

But first, we must get out of bed. So do that, have a nutritious breakfast and enjoy your Saturday. You have earned it!

Saturday Morning Light

It’s a quiet early September Saturday morning. Last night’s rain cooled things down so we decided to postpone our hike to late morning. This gives me the chance to rest a while after a busy week at work preceded by several days of travel and adventure.

Morning light streams through the windows. I’m curled up with a book and soft fall throw. It’s plaid and beautiful, soft and warm. The cat sits in the window watching the world go by as only a cat can do. He eventually relocates to a patch of warm light where he quietly bathes. I marvel at how quietly he can do that during the day and how noisy the slurping is at night when he’s sitting next to me.

My most prominent worry today is how to dress for the hike on this cool morning. It has been so hot and dry for so long, I think I have forgotten how to function when the temperature dips.

It’s going to be a beautiful day. Your responsibilities can wait. Go enjoy it, friends.

Lazy Saturday

Yesterday was a rare lazy day but it didn’t really go as planned.

This week hasn’t been restful so I was grateful for a day at home. I stayed in bed, finishing a Simone St. James page turner, before doing a few chores. Bob the Shark cleaned the floors while Scout periodically reported back that the monster was a menace and needs to go.

It was too windy to be outside. The sunshine beckoned me to the woods but it didn’t feel safe to be under a canopy of tree limbs likely weakened by winter storms. So I turned off the furnace and opened the windows to let the fresh air in. Leftover soup made for a tasty lunch. I had made it Thursday using about-to-expire ingredients and was quite smug when I didn’t have to cook.

And then the wind picked up more and the power went out. So I laid down in bed with a book and promptly went to sleep for the next two hours. Honestly, I think I slept for over two hours and it felt amazing.

The last time I checked the power company was reporting 14,000 customers in the dark with over 300 outage incidents. They’re doing their best but it’s hard to combat Mother Nature’s tirades when they lead to massive tree damage.

And so, I’m writing this at 8:13 p.m. with no hope of seeing electric again for a while. I’m headed back to bed with another book and a flashlight. Here’s hoping all those linemen are safe on the job this weekend while I’m cozy in bed.

Every day can’t be a grand adventure. Sometimes you can make bad circumstances better by leaning into them and accepting them for what they are. For me that means resting up and coping with the circumstances in preparation for better days ahead.

Today

Today is Saturday.

Yesterday, you said tomorrow. Whatever it was, don’t say tomorrow for even one more day. Skip the excuses and do the thing.

You may be surprised at how good it feels. Besides, tomorrow you’ll wish you had started today.

Today

Wherever you are, I hope you can find a way to safely get out of the house and enjoy this day. Go for a walk, take a drive, or just make an ice cream run – do something different, something that will make you smile.

Happy Saturday, friends.
