Some Bland Pictures And Plan B

Last weekend’s walk at the lake was chilly and a little dreary. The sky was white and it felt like the calm before the storm. In fact, it was the calm before the storm as six inches of snow blanketed the earth by the next morning.

I made a number of pictures with my iPhone anyway, appreciating the starkness of the landscape and thinking the images might be interesting when transformed into black and white.

Turns out, I was wrong. They weren’t at all pleasant that way.

However, I did fiddle with them and warmed them up to give some new life – or any life at all, really. I’m not especially fond of heavily edited photos and usually favor the documentary approach but this saved the entire collection from deletion.

The above image of the bridge turned out especially nice.

I also liked this one of the icy water.

And this one of another bridge.

This image of the geese reminded me of a story from Fried Green Tomatoes about some ducks caught swimming in a lake when it suddenly froze over. They took off and flew away with that lake. To this day it’s somewhere in Georgia. Or so the story goes.

The sight of them all gleefully splashing, diving and taking flight made me wish for my camera with the long lens.

This exercise with the photos reminded me that circumstances are not always as we want them to be. The fact that the sky is gray doesn’t make it a bad day. It does mean we have to work a little harder to find the beauty and the good.

And it’s possible that these bland days exist to make us appreciate the sunshine and blue skies better. Here’s to the hearty souls who can at least try to find goodness in every day.

X Marks The Spot

I wandered outside with my camera and iPhone for a few minutes near sunset last night. This isn’t the best image from this collection but it is kind of cool.

Sometimes cool is better than perfect – especially when there’s a perfect X involved in nature.

Have a good day, friends. Stay warm and well wherever you may be.

Normalcy At Lake Alma

An after work walk at Lake Alma was an excellent ending to yesterday. Here are a few images from my journey before the sun slipped away.

A seat with a view.

A great bridge.

Lake Alma’s Official Bird – the Canada Goose.

My favorite bridge.

It wasn’t crowded but there were a number of people out soaking up the sun on this unseasonably warm December day. There were children playing, dog walkers, a runner and even a guy on a bicycle.

It all felt spectacularly normal and I was grateful for this day.

A Walk In The Neighborhood

My neighbor very kindly has invited my family to walk her property all we like.

There’s forest and field filled with birds, squirrels, deer and other critters as well as remnants of a simpler time. It’s peaceful and pretty and a real treat to enjoy.

Thanks Dot! We appreciate you!

A Smashed Peep (and some other stuff)

I ran away for a long lunch Thursday. Basking in the sunshine and walking the bike path at a favorite park felt like the epitome of freedom. Everything is COVID closed but you can still walk and drive around the lake.

This car turned my head.

And I went back for a closer look at these Peep bunnies, clearly run over by something. That’s not something you see every day and I liked the pink against the asphalt!

It was gorgeous out so I was sad to go home and resume working. But opening the window in the room where I work to let Scout enjoy the fresh air made the afternoon pass quickly. This picture was taken before the window was open but you get the idea.

He was a happy boy and I was thrilled for the fresh breeze and chatter of birds nearby.

My world has become very small and familiar. While this isn’t ideal, it is sort of fun to look more closely at your surroundings and seek out the details you might not ordinarily appreciate or even notice as close as your own home. Take a look around. You never know what you might find.

A Long Walk…

This picture reminds me of the phrase “take a long walk off a short pier.” Not that I would offer this invitation to anyone but it is a great turn of phrase!
