Calm Waters

This season of life I’m in isn’t the best. There’s no need for worry. I don’t need counseling or a spa day. No need for a major life shake-up either. The phrase “it is what it is” comes to mind a lot more than normal and I’m the kind of tired that can’t be cured by a good night’s sleep.

It is what it is.

But it’s a season of life rather than the way it will always be. So it’s ok.

I’m starting to allow my mind to wander into adventure season. Oh, the places I might go!  I’m currently craving outdoor time and a road trip. The thought of throwing open the windows, getting rid of most everything I own and scrubbing clean what’s left is sounding more appealing by the day.

Again, don’t worry. This happens every year at this time and I solemnly promise not to pitch my couch and my entire wardrobe out into the front yard!

Even if  it is tempting.

For now, I’m settling for short bursts of outdoor time because fresh air is good for the mind, body and spirit. On Tuesday night I went to Lake Alma State  Park  for a walk on the busy bike path. It wasn’t quite the outdoor fun I had planned but it at least was some fresh air and exercise

I marveled at the water. Look how glassy and still it is!  The trees remain bare as it isn’t white time for the spring bloomers. The sky was a brilliant blue we typically don’t see this time of year.

Calm water. Still water. It’s what I needed on that day and at that time. If only everything else could be so easy as beautiful nature reflected in calm water!

A Walk In The Park

Mother Nature is currently having a nervous breakdown here in southern Ohio. While I’m missing my winter snow and cold, it was nice to slip outside for a walk at Lake Alma last night.

It was 53 degrees and sunny – warm enough that my jacket seemed a little too much. The light was golden and the reflection off the lake so bright it was practically blinding.

Of course, it has been so gray of late that any sign of the sun seems bright!

Fresh air in my lungs, movement in my muscles and beautiful trees and water as far as the eye could see were exactly what I needed.

Plus, knowing that I was walking after work meant that I had something to look forward to all day long. As far as I’m concerned, having something to look forward to every day is one of the keys to happiness. Spending time in nature is another. How fortunate when the two work together!!

We get a finite number of days in our lives. Why not find a way to enjoy each of them? Why not take advantage of these pretty days to do something truly good for ourselves?

Whatever you enjoy, find a way to enjoy it and have a fantastic day!

A Morning Walk

Yesterday brought a rare weekday morning off from work. We have been under a heat advisory for the last several days so I took advantage of this found time and headed to the lake for an early walk. Lots of other people seemed to have the same idea as it was busier than normal with walkers and joggers.

Walking here is nice because it’s a paved path close to home where I can measure exactly how far I have walked. There is often a little breeze and that breeze yesterday felt divine.

The light was pretty so I stopped to snap a picture of these boats that are available for rent. if you look closely, you’ll see the bridge to the island in the background. That bridge has appeared on this blog a few times over the years and is a favorite subject of mine.

This swing looked so inviting that I paused for a picture. For a split second, I considered how nice it would be to sit there with a cold lemonade and watch the day go by.

Then I remembered that the heat index would soon be 110 and that once the shade was gone the sun would burn me to a painful shade of lobster red.

So I kept moving. That’s more my speed anyway. Movement makes me happier than sitting around any day.

When it comes to the seasons, summer is my least favorite because the heat and humidity here tend to keep me indoors or strategizing how to accomplish things with the precision and control of an Army General. Keep moving, soldier. The heat is the enemy and it will soon be upon us!

We are supposed to have a reprieve from the heat this weekend before it comes raging back again next week. I’m going to head outside for a while today and breathe air that doesn’t hurt my lungs. Wherever you are, stay safe and enjoy your day!

In Like A Lamb

Have you heard the proverb “in like a lion, out like a lamb” when referring to March weather? I’m assuming the opposite is true and that March will leave like a lion when it comes in as pleasant as this week promises to be.

I hit my usual walking spot last night after work, sporting dress pants and a sweater with my walking shoes. While oddly dressed for my activity, there was no need at all for a jacket.

In fact, it was a gorgeous evening to be outdoors and today promises to be even better with a forecast of sun and fifties. Since March is arriving as meek as a little lost lamb, I’m devising a plan for some adventure this weekend. An important key to happiness is always having something to look forward to and I’m eager to hit the road!

Winter certainly isn’t over here in Ohio but we can worry about that lion a little later! Let’s all enjoy this beautiful week! Welcome to March, friends!!

Fool’s Spring

Temperatures have soared and most of the ice and snow have turned to mud this week. I walked the bike path at the lake after work yesterday and was pleased to see so many people out enjoying the sunshine.

Sadly, this is only February and I live in Ohio. Spring has not sprung. This, my friends, is what we cynics call Fool’s Spring.

The sunshine and balmy 45 degree temperatures are just Mother Nature’s way of charming and teasing us with one of her mood swings. Winter will be back so don’t put away those ice scrapers and Bernie mittens just yet.

Lucky for me, I like cold and snow!

Winter Walk

I walked with a friend at a local park yesterday.

It was a beautiful day for a long walk at a familiar place.

I always say the official mascot here is the Canada Geese. Yesterday didn’t disappoint. They were everywhere.

Between this walk and some shopping, my Fitbit logged about nine miles. That’s not half bad for a day of leisure!
