Spring Chores

We have passed the mid point of March which means spring will soon be here. In southern Ohio, this season used to stretch on for a couple of months. Now it’s more like three weeks of moderate temperatures before giving way to humidity and heat.

It occurred to me this weekend that I have a boatload of outdoor work I want to get done before summer moves in. Incidentally, it is mostly the same stuff I wanted done last year.

There’s a big patch of poison ivy and weeds surrounding a tree stump in my front yard that desperately needs addressed. The house needs power washed. There’s a shed needing cleaned out. The back porch needs a good scrub. There’s a lot of flower bed work too.

This would be a great time to take care of that shed and the junk piled up around it but I’m lacking the motivation and time to get outside and tackle it.

This doesn’t bode well for the rest of that list.

Meanwhile, we received snow last night. It was eighty degree just a few days ago. Maybe next weekend.

What’s on your spring list? It would be good to get our chores done now so we are free to adventure later.

Brush Pile Beauty

The transition from winter into spring is both quiet and fierce. As flowers gently push through the earth, the wind forces its way through the pines. The brilliant blue sky is accented by leisurely wbarren trees and clouds while last year’s lifeless grass seems to grow tall and green overnight.

I tend to walk around the yard more than normal, looking for clues as to how the season progresses. Yesterday I found this daffodil growing from last summer’s brush pile.

It was likely mixed in with debris and weeds cleared from a nearby flower bed last year, mistaken for a near invasive species that I worked hard to eradicate.

Imagine being that poor flower, uprooted from home and thrown into the trash because of a serious case of mistaken identity.

Yet it grows.

In fact, it reached through a tangle of debris to create a new home for itself and grow into a beautiful flower.

It gives new and literal meaning to the phrase “bloom where you are planted.”

It’s also a gentle reminder that someone else’s poor choice to mistreat you or to toss you aside should not determine your future. Define your own future. Thrive just to spite them. Make your surroundings better because you can.

The world will be better for it too.

Supervisors

I have been filling most evenings recently with yard work. A few nights ago, this skink stopped by while I was mulching. He hung around for a long time, supervising my efforts.

Last night, this handsome fellow appeared while I was trying to clear a patch of poison ivy. I’m not sure if he’s a stray or if he belongs to a neighbor but he was chatty. I asked his name and he murmured a few short meows. When I suggested he should go home, he said something that sounded like no.

I can’t deal with any more strays right now so I went back to work and ignored him till he disappeared. But man, it was hard. If I ever win the lottery, I’m going to have all the cats I want and provide a home to anyone that needs it.

Meanwhile, I’ll just admire their pretty faces and be glad that they sometimes stop by to supervise me.

Thankful Tuesday

Adventuring has been put on hold for the last couple of weeks as I focus on getting flower beds under control. I’m about halfway done but am hoping to work on weeknights this week to free up next weekend for something that doesn’t leave me dirty, battered, sun burned and covered in poison ivy.

It’s time to hit the open road and have some fun!

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the exercise and the sense of accomplishment. It has been as good for my mental health as it has been for the flowers and, for that, I am grateful.

Catching Up

One disadvantage of being an amateur backroads wanderer is that I’m constantly in a state of wanting to pack a bag and run away. Another is that it’s easy to fall behind on household chores.

I have a long list of outdoor projects I had hoped to complete this month but it’s looking doubtful – between rain, allergies and wandering around – there simply hasn’t been a lot of opportunity for productivity.

I jokingly told a couple of female coworkers that I was gonna have to find a man so I would have help with the weedeating, pruning, power washing and other assorted chores awaiting attention. Both of them are married and aptly suggested that I just hire help. Ha ha.

I’m too cheap for that because I need all my funds for adventures! So here’s hoping I can knock out a bunch of chores later today so I can go out to play on Saturday without too much guilt!
