Unintended Consequences

While doing some yard work this week I accidentally uncovered this nest of pretty eggs. I was cutting a bunch of tall weeds and some bird had carefully crafted her nest in the top of a very small cedar tree beneath those weeds. Now the nest is exposed because of me and I’m sure the mother won’t be back.

This is your friendly reminder that, as you go through your day doing what you think is right, there could be unseen consequences for others.

It’s often unavoidable and usually not intended. All the same, your choices can cause a domino effect and you may not even know it.

Have a good Saturday, friends. If we are lucky, maybe some of this unintended consequences will be for the good today!

Sleepy Eyes

Look at those sleepy eyes. I disrupted his slumber by pulling back the covers on Thanksgiving. As he laid there blinking and stretching, it occurred to me that we all can benefit from channeling our inner feline.

We all should listen to our bodies, stretching often and snoozing as long as possible. We should get some Vitamin D by seeking out the warm, sunny spots. We should hum loudly when we’re happy and take another nap just in case the first one didn’t help us feel rested enough. Most of all, we should be satisfied that we are enough and that we are purrfect exactly as we are.

And if anyone tries to make us feel bad, we should hiss and put them in their place!

But first, that nap…..

At Ease In Your Own Shell

Try to be like a turtle – at ease in your own shell.

Bill Copeland

This little guy was passing through my parents’ yard last night. He was not at all intimidated by humans so I was able to grab a few pictures. Being the strange person that I am, I talked to him and asked questions he couldn’t answer.

Where did you come from? Where are you headed, buddy? It was a hot day and you’re dusty and dry. Are you ok?

He kept me in his sights, blinking occasionally as though trying to tell me a big story.

I don’t like to move turtles unless they’re in harm’s way but he was in the middle of the yard with no shade or vegetation nearby. So dad carefully relocated him about twenty feet forward in the direction he was headed.

When I left, he was in the shade of a hosta and my mother was headed to the fridge for some lettuce to take to him. There was nothing between where he was located and where we put him so I think we did ok.

This little guy seemed extremely comfortable in his shell and was brave too. Note how even stuck his neck out.

That’s how you make progress in life: stay calm, accept help when necessary, stick your neck out for what’s important, and above all else, be comfortable in your own shell.

Brush Pile Beauty

The transition from winter into spring is both quiet and fierce. As flowers gently push through the earth, the wind forces its way through the pines. The brilliant blue sky is accented by leisurely wbarren trees and clouds while last year’s lifeless grass seems to grow tall and green overnight.

I tend to walk around the yard more than normal, looking for clues as to how the season progresses. Yesterday I found this daffodil growing from last summer’s brush pile.

It was likely mixed in with debris and weeds cleared from a nearby flower bed last year, mistaken for a near invasive species that I worked hard to eradicate.

Imagine being that poor flower, uprooted from home and thrown into the trash because of a serious case of mistaken identity.

Yet it grows.

In fact, it reached through a tangle of debris to create a new home for itself and grow into a beautiful flower.

It gives new and literal meaning to the phrase “bloom where you are planted.”

It’s also a gentle reminder that someone else’s poor choice to mistreat you or to toss you aside should not determine your future. Define your own future. Thrive just to spite them. Make your surroundings better because you can.

The world will be better for it too.

The Smart Bird Gets The Seed

My yard is populated by countless species of birds who all fight for a spot at my bird feeder. This little guy is smart. He was hanging out underneath the feeder, waiting for the seed that got dropped.  Perhaps we all can learn a lesson from this – Sometimes it’s ok to let everyone else fight it out while you still get what you want! I liked his style.
