Beyond Bedtime Books

If you ever find yourself in Pittsburgh and in need of a good bookstore, look up Beyond Bedtime Books. This small shop is packed from floor to ceiling with an amazing selection of used books.

You’ll find bestsellers mixed in with the rare and obscure. The atmosphere is pleasant, the prices are good and the service is terrific.

There’s even a nice kid’s section and a few places where you can sit quietly to take a book for a spin before buying. I brought home a signed Fannie Flagg book for my collection and admired so many things I was lucky to escape with a relatively small stack.

Independent booksellers are the very best and visiting stores look this one is a little like setting out on a hunt for buried treasure. You never know what you might find.

Want to check them out? Visit their website for more information and for links to their social media.

Want to make it a day? We also had brunch at The Grand Concourse and strolled through one of the city’s happiest places – The Phipps. Here’s a story about that place from another day.

Somewhere In Chelsea

Somewhere in Chelsea, a window asked a question.

What Are You Made Of?

It’s a bold question and one I didn’t expect to be thinking about as I traipsed through the Big Apple on a whirlwind Christmas adventure. We all probably ought to be ready with the answer but I’m not sure I know anymore.

And maybe that’s ok. We don’t always need all the answers.

It has been a long and challenging few years for the world in general and for me specifically. Adventure season will be here soon. Maybe I’ll start to remember then who I am and what I’m made of.

So, you know I have to ask What are you made of? I can’t wait to hear.

Chelsea Market

It rained for part of our New York City Adventure in 2022 so we had a delightful excuse to spend time exploring Chelsea Market.

Most normal people go there for the food and shopping. In fact, it’s a destination for foodies. The ground level concourse is packed with sights, sounds, people and delicious smells of various cuisines. The design nerd in me couldn’t get enough of all the cool fonts and signs, the exposed brick, murals and pops of colors at every turn.

Everyone else was looking for fun things to buy but I was more excited for the history of the place. You see, this 1890s era building was originally the home of the National Biscuit Company. In case this doesn’t ring any bells, that company would become Nabisco in 1971. This building is where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced beginning in March 1912.

Yes! The mighty Oreo with all its yummy goodness designed for dunking in milk, came from right here in Manhattan!

The building was reimagined in the nineties to allow for this consumer’s paradise as well as office space upstairs.

We got lost in the flow of the crowd, enjoying the hustle and bustle of this busy attraction before stopping for brunch. This was mine and it was dangerously delicious.

We browsed at a wonderful little bookseller. I had left my book behind in Pittsburgh so I was obligated to buy one so I would have something to read. In case you’re wondering, this is the book I bought.

We admired Asian inspired gifts.

I got separated from the group stopping to admire pretty flowers.

Then there were the murals.

In all, Chelsea Market was a feast for the senses for this country mouse. It’s a prime place to people watch and wile away a rainy day. If you find yourself in New York, this is a fun detour for a meal and some entertainment. Also, there are clean restrooms here and those are hard to come by in this city.

Here’s one more look at the Concourse.

Springtime

Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.

Lewis Grizzard

Blue Sky

Spring sprung yesterday and I celebrated with a walk at a favorite place. Sadly, it still looks like winter. In southern Ohio that means everything is brown and ugly. But I saw some signs of life that indicate the landscape will be green and brushy within a few weeks.

Of course, everything is prettier when the sky is blue. Here’s wishing us all blue skies today!

Scout And The Shark

I found a deal on a Shark Robotic vacuum and spent part of yesterday watching Scout stalk it through the house.

He seems to think I have been bewitched by this crazy monster that has invaded his home, bumping into things and crawling under all the furniture. He periodically comes to get me to make sure I know that it’s still around and terrorizing the dust bunnies.

He actually took it better than I expected but he literally got no rest yesterday, even keeping an eye on it while charging on its dock. My little house panther will adjust but, for right now, it has been great fun watching him stalk and explore this newcomer!
