Around Here

Around here, my long awaited Christmas vacation is winding down. It’s back to work on Friday even though it feels like I’ve hardly had a break. I’m cherishing these last few days.

Around here, Mother Nature is doing her Ohio thing where the mercury rises to 65 degrees one day and then plummets overnight to a daytime high of 20. Factor in a wind so strong it will knock you down and suddenly winter has arrived.

Around here, I have several projects underway. One is to remove most of the Christmas decorations but I’m leaving up the tree for a while. It has white lights, pretty ribbons and woodland themed ornaments. This tree is pretty in the winter without being Christmasey. Some snowmen and other non Christmas specific things will stay out. Meanwhile, the place is bare in spots and piled up with totes ready to store.

Another project involves finally getting my craft room in order. This is where I store hobby supplies, holidays decorations and extra decor. I have a weakness for vintage and antique items and like to freshen up my home by rotating in and out small pieces of interest. That room is a habitual mess but I swear this is the year I get it done. To that end, I bought a shelving unit which I assembled over the weekend. Progress can be seen but, golly, there’s much to do.

Around here, I am working on my reading goal for the year and considering what my goal should be in 2026. I’m finishing up my 101st book – one over the 2025 goal. While that list includes some good fiction, there was very little nonfiction and several kids books. This is a sign of how tired my mind was and how badly I needed some quiet, fun distraction rather than learning and enrichment.

I’m thinking about knocking the goal down to 75 or 80 to make it easier. My goal means absolutely nothing but it does keep me reading and it keeps me always ready to start the next good book. There’s some wisdom in making it high just to keep me engaged with my TBR.

Scout is enjoying having me home and especially appreciates how much time I have spent relaxing with a book lately. He finds reading time a wonderful opportunity for naps!

Around here, I’m gearing up for my January No Spend Challenge. This is an annual tradition and one I look forward to every year. I’m currently compiling my annual list of things to do that don’t involve spending money. I’m up to about sixty activities ranging from fun things like dabbling with watercolors and putting together a puzzle to going for a hike and doing chores like cleaning closets and decluttering.

Around here, as nature turns cold and less habitable, I am turning inward. My mind is quieter. I’m using this time to calm my nervous system. Two doctors have informed me recently that I’ll never be better until I work on this. Soft lights, quiet, and the softness of home are just what I need and exactly what I aim to embrace during my No Spend Challenge.

Around here, there are stories waiting to be told and others waiting to be read. Some are waiting to be lived. A new year is just around the corner.

I’ll be around here if you need me.

Happy Plan A Solo Vacation Day

Today is Plan a Solo Vacation Day. When most people think of vacation, they envision family on the beach, girlfriends on a cruise, or a mountain getaway with their significant other. What if I told you that solo travel can be unrivaled in enjoyment and self discovery? It can also lead to the absolute most amazing, liberating experiences of your lifetime.

I’ve had so many people discourage me from traveling alone over the years. Older women always say they won’t even eat alone in a restaurant. They can’t imagine walking into a hotel alone. Men like to tell me how dangerous the world is for a female to be out alone and often share ways to dress, travel and look alert so I’m not an easy target for unscrupulous men. It always makes me wonder why they don’t work on shaming other men for being terrible rather than making me feel bad for wanting to live my life.

Once in a while, I encounter someone who looks at me with wide eyed wonder and exclaims that they’ve always wanted to go somewhere by themselves but wouldn’t know where to start. If you’re that person, here’s where you start.

You start close to home. Go to a nearby town, somewhere with a nice downtown just an hour or two away. Look for a place that has a lot of nice shops or a great restaurant or museum. Park your car and take a walk. That’s it.

Take a walk. What do you see? A nice store? Go inside.  Browse while you talk to the shopkeeper. Buy something and ask the proprietor about the origin of the product you’re buying. Or don’t buy anything and just have a friendly conversation. The point of this exercise isn’t to spend a lot of money so much as it is to interact with the world without the safety net of someone you know. After all, if you have a friend along, you’ll talk to them rather than strangers and maybe miss out on something fabulous.

Now go into a restaurant or a bakery. Order something yummy. Sit and enjoy it. Chat up your server. Make eye contact with another diner and smile. Play on your phone or just sit quietly and enjoy your own thoughts.

Keep going on your walk and look closer. Start to notice the cool architecture. Is that a mural down that street? Look at all the beautiful flowers the city has planted. Pay attention. Engage with a stranger. Absorb your surroundings and be excited about the possibility there’s something cool around the next corner.

Maybe there is, maybe there isn’t but the mere possibility is enough to keep us searching,

And that there, my friends, is what travel is all about. It’s about the search for something different than what you know, for something you haven’t seen before, or for something familiar that’s lost to you in your daily life.

Make that first solo expedition a short one. A day trip will do fine or stay overnight. Don’t overcommit. Leave yourself wanting more. Make it so you are sad to go home and excited to plan that next journey.

As for that next journey, choose somewhere with lots that interests you and get started on your research. Do be smart. Research your destination for safety and affordability. Don’t book a nonrefundable hotel room for five days when your destination should have been a weekend. That’s a rookie mistake. Ahem. Yours truly did that once and learned a valuable lesson from it. Since then, I have learned to do better research and to build in more flexibility. In fact, my best solo trips have been the kind where I committed to no hotel for more than a night or two and was ready to pull up stakes and head down the road.

When you travel alone, you learn things you never expected, You encounter people you might never meet when traveling with others. You meet your true self too. You find out that you’re too agreeable when with others or that you truly love a road trip with no plans beyond the overnight bag in the trunk. You learn that it’s ok to take the exit at the last minute because the sign said there’s a donut shop thataway. When with a companion, you often pass the exit before someone decides that donuts are a good idea.

The answer though is that fresh donuts are always a good idea.

You may find that you’re scared sometimes but that’s really just a chance to be brave. And best of all, when you find the courage to be brave, it will be the source of great joy and wonders.

What are you waiting for? Don’t wait for friends or a husband or for anyone else. Plan it and go. And, of course, report back. I’m always looking for inspiration!

Reflections

My last multi-day adventure was to Ohio’s Amish Country in December. It was sort of a bust. In fact, I’m so far behind in storytelling I can’t remember if any of those stories even made it here.

I haven’t really allowed myself to dream about this year’s adventures but am hoping to get in a fun weekend soon.

There’s nothing more invigorating than setting out early in the morning to explore the road less traveled. Some of my best adventures have been a few days in a place where I have just walked around, taking pictures, talking to people and seeing what’s what.

It has been too long since I had one of these trips and man, am I excited to get one in.

Will you go somewhere this year or will you be a tourist in your own back yard? Either way can be lots of fun! Tell me all about it!

Now I’m Home

Anytime I travel, I make an effort to hike one of my usual trails soon after returning home. It’s one of my rituals and is as important as unpacking, doing laundry and restocking the fridge.

It’s a way to ground myself, to settle my mind and reconnect to my surroundings. It’s the perfect way to find myself again.

That’s exactly what I did last night, hitting a familiar trail with an old friend and a new one. Ohio’s heat wave has broken so it was a perfect temperature for an almost six mile loop through pines and past a lake.

This was exactly what I needed before returning to work and to the stress that seems to naturally come with life lately.

I’m grateful for the time away and for the adventures that came with it but am glad also for a chance to engage with the natural world.

Come back tomorrow. We will talk Michigan adventures!!

Home From Adventure

I have been out exploring for the last several days. It was my annual whirlwind western adventure trip with my Wyoming gal pal. While I’m sad to see it end already, I am pooped and ready for some rest in my own bed and my own time zone.

We had a nice mix of planned and unplanned adventures, time outside, time indoors and yes, even some independent bookstore shopping! In so many ways – both in lifestyle and in appearance, Colorado is like the surface of the moon compared to my Ohio home so I’m feeling inspired to make some lifestyle improvements.

I like adventures that make me want to be a better person.

There are lots of stories and pictures to come so be sure to check back tomorrow and the days to come!

Vacation

“Vacation used to be a luxury, however, in today’s world, it has become a necessity.” Anonymous

I have a couple of trips coming soon and they can’t get here quick enough. Ordinarily, I think that half the fun is the anticipation of the trip but my life has kept me so busy lately it’s too painful to even dream about the good things that are to come.

I need the time off more than ever and am grateful it will be here soon.

What about you? Did you squeeze in a summer vacation? Where are you going? The picture above is from a Washington DC trip a couple of years ago.
