Vintage Astronauts

Did you play with little green Army men when you were a kid? Seems like I played with the cowboys and Indians and maybe a plastic farm set as well.

Did you know there were astronauts too?

When I was a kid, nearly every grocery store and five and dime had a rack of bags packed with these little inexpensive plastic figures.

Every kid had some but these astronauts were before my time – likely from the mid to late sixties when Americans were space obsessed and headed for the moon.

The first Army men were produced in 1938 by Bergen Toy and Novelty Company. Over time, a number of other companies offered their version. I didn’t study these in the store but a quick Google search tells me they likely were made by the Marx or Multiple Products Company.

For me, half the fun of antiquing is finding things I haven’t seen before. This certainly fit the bill. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t buy them. Perhaps they’re still hanging on a rack at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall!

Snooze

This place is on the list for my next trip to Denver. It’s a breakfast joint and they’re committed to locally sourced and delicious food as well as to recycling about ninety percent of their waste.

Plus one percent of their sales go back to the community.

If the food is half as good as their philosophies, there’s much to look forward to. They even have vegan and vegetarian options as well as some French toast that looks divine. The creativity and consideration toward non-carnivores found in small chains like this place makes dining out fun for people like me.

Notes From The Field

I took my own advice yesterday and went for a hike. It was 32 degrees but sunny and the sky was a beautiful bright blue.

Turns out, lots of people had the same idea and I encountered more hikers than normal. This simultaneously makes me happy to see others engaging with nature and irritated that I have to put up with them.

But that’s ok. Sharing is good.

It was a perfect day to be out on my favorite trail at my favorite local state park.

There’s comfort in the familiar. Like this tree that is a sort of landmark on this trail.

Winter provides opportunity to see things you might not otherwise notice. Since the landscape is quite bare, you notice more the few pops of color.

You learn to appreciate the might and will of a tree and the roots it lays to survive.

It’s easier to appreciate the sun on your face on a cold, windy day than on a warm one. At one point I stopped in a patch of sunlight and stood for a long time just listening to the birds. There was a woodpecker high above and little birds chirping and hopping on the ground nearby.

In the last quarter mile, I encountered another solo hiker who wore an enormous grin. His hair was long and wild and he was easy to spot in a brightly colored jacket. Honestly, he looked kind of crazy bounding down the trail with that huge grin on his face.

I spent a few seconds considering whether he was a crazy serial killer (one of those with three names because the worst ones always have three names). But before I could reach for my pepper spray or nickname him Billy George Ray he said four wonderful words.

“This Day Is EPIC.”

And I couldn’t help but agree.

It was epic and I can’t wait to do it again. Hope yours was too.

Deep Breath

It has been a rough week here in America.

A roller coaster has had nothing on our politics for the last few years but never more so than this week. We clearly are witnessing history so I have labored to balance my desire to stay informed with my need for peace of mind.

Today, sanity needs to win. It’s Saturday. Let’s try to have a good weekend.

Turn off the news. Shut down Facebook. Stop listening to the rantings of conspiracy theorists.

We can’t fix the world and if arguing politics with your neighbor for the last five years hasn’t changed them yet, today won’t matter either. You can, however, help yourself. So go do that.

Take a deep breath.

Go outside

DO SOMETHING.

The forecast today is for thirties and maybe some sun. Good enough for me. I’m going to find a place to walk or take a hike in the woods.

Afterward, maybe I’ll clean out a closet or curl up in my new chair with a book and hot chocolate. Maybe I’ll listen to vintage records while making pancakes to freeze for some other morning. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” is in my LP collection somewhere and reminds me of this image above. It’s from a walk at a local park last month.

I could play with the watercolors I got for Christmas or make some sweet potato chips and have a movie marathon with the cat. The shower needs cleaned and it wouldn’t hurt to clean out the fridge.

I know I won’t be shopping and spending money as this is just day nine of my No Spend Challenge. Luckily, the list of possibilities for a winter Saturday around home is endless!

Take care and enjoy this day. Our problems can wait till tomorrow.

The New Chair

A comfy reading chair has been on my wish list for some time. I have looked at many in stores and online, unable to find exactly what I wanted for well over a year.

There was one in an antique store, too big to fit in the Nerd Mobile. Then there was a wingback chair I tried on for size at IKEA in Centennial, Colorado. That one was SO comfy, in my budget and in stock at their location near Cincinnati but I wasn’t sure it would fit in the car either. Their shipping fees were cost prohibitive.

Most stores around here cater to the recliner crowd and that’s not what I wanted so I turned my eye to the endless parade of comfy chairs available online.

I had studied reviews, prices and chair designs so much that my social media feed advertising consisted almost exclusively of chair ads. Plus, deciphering online reviews is a true art. Spoiler alert – they’re next to useless.

Long story short. I was starting to feel like the loss of my sanity was on the horizon.

Ironic, isn’t it? The thing that I was obsessing over was the thing I needed to help me relax.

That’s why it came as a surprise that I made a quick Christmas Day decision to use a monetary gift from my parents to order a chair right then and there.

I spent the next several days obsessing over whether or not I would like the thing, tracking its progress from a warehouse in Georgia to Ohio where Fed Ex seemed to play some weird game of hot potato, passing it back and forth between the same two facilities here.

By the time the Fed Ex guy deposited it on my porch Monday I was certain that it would either be damaged or that I would hate the darn thing.

But all’s well that ends well. It’s pristine, pretty and comfortable.

There are few purchases these days that I believe will truly enhance my life. This is one of them as the vegan leather is soft as silk, providing a comfy spot to sit and read or watch tv. It’s also pretty and makes me smile.

As much time as I spend at home these days, that alone makes this chair worth its weight in gold.

While we are on the subject of deliveries, I just want to note what a tough job our delivery people have these days. They’re not just carrying letters and small parcels anymore. These folks are lugging around furniture and a mountain of packages from across the globe. I’m grateful to them all for keeping our stuff moving.

One Nation

I have a lot on my mind today. None of it am I prepared to organize and share.

Instead, I encourage you all to be kind to one another, to set aside your differences, to embrace what is right, and to move forward as part of the solution.

Enough is enough. Our country badly needs to heal as one nation.

Words matter. So I leave you with these 31 words.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America

And to the Republic for which it stands

One nation, under God

Indivisible with Liberty and justice for all.
